Ten Things of Thankful: Getting Ready to Party Edition

Next week, the Ten Things of Thankful blog hop celebrates its 6th anniversary. To make it extra special, we're going to join with Finish the Sentence Friday. The more the merrier! Please mark your calendars, throw up the party banner, pick up a cupcake, and get ready to celebrate with us!

We don't have to wait until a big event to remember why we are thankful, though. Knowing that each week I will be making a list makes me look for reasons to be thankful. Here are the things I found this week:

1. I'm thankful for an upcoming graduation. Although oldest daughter graduated from law school last year and passed the bar exam, she decided to take a few more classes so she could get a master's in tax law. She finishes her finals this week and graduation is on the horizon.

2. I'm thankful that said daughter also was hired at a firm that exactly suits her. She will be working with families with disabled members, doing estate planning, guardianships, special needs trusts, etc.

3. I'm thankful that youngest daughter's willingness to share her story helped oldest daughter get her job. The lawyers at the firm all have family members with disabilities, and oldest daughter was able to explain that she, too, personally understood the impact of disability on a family.

4. I'm thankful for my own sister, whose birthday is today. Happy birthday!

5. I'm thankful for the rain we have received this spring. It's the 2nd rainiest spring on record here, and all the moisture has made everything so green! I know it won't be like this every year, but I am really enjoying it while it lasts.

Photo: The view from my back door of a green (normally brown) mountain foothill. John stands with a shovel (more on that later) near rocks that form a dry creek bed. In the foreground are two patio tables and chairs.
6. I'm thankful for projects completed. The roses are planted, and the protective fencing is up. The deer might have already headed further up the mountain for summer, but we didn't want to risk it.

7. I'm thankful the roses like their new digs. Two of the plants are already starting to bud!

8. I'm thankful that each project completed (and in progress) helps us see more clearly the vision for the yard. John no sooner finished the rose bed, than he started digging out the area for a fire pit.

9. I'm thankful for book club. This week we discussed Just Mercy. If you haven't read it, I recommend you do. It's definitely eye-opening. We had a good discussion about justice and mercy, policy and the importance of personal connection. If you're looking for a light summer escape of a read, this isn't it, but if you like reading thought-provoking books of substance, try Just Mercy.

10. I'm thankful for John. He's got a great balance: he's not a workaholic, but he's also a hard worker. I appreciate both his dedication to his work, and his priorities.

What are you thankful for this week? Are you planning to attend next week's anniversary party? I hope so!

  1. I'm thankful for this group! I was reading to Hans about oldest daughter and he was asking about which firm, then I explained we are from all over the place. He's a CPA and said that's awesome about your daughter. We're also figuring out about special needs trust and able accounts.

  3. Totally on my calendar for next weekend. Glad to hear that Kristi Campbell and them will be joining in on the 'hop, (very talented bunch of bloggers there).
Pass on birthday greetings to your sister.
Watching with interest John's efforts and progress with the landscape project. Nothing more satisfying, for the 'scale of effect' if nothing else. Altering the earth itself.

    1. Yes, the TToT has attracted very talented bloggers throughout the years, and I'm looking forward to a reunion of sorts this next weekend.

John's outside digging right now. The project is certainly taking shape.

    1. Thank you. She is a good fit for this particular firm, and I couldn't be happier for her.

I'll post updates as the project progresses. :-)

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
