Thursday Thoughts: Weekend Getaways

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know I'm a big advocate of weekly date nights. Children need to see their parents making marriage a priority.  Children can feel secure knowing that their parents love each other, and love them.

Besides weekly date nights, I also think it is important for couples to take a weekend trip together every now and then.  Granted, it is more difficult when the kids are young, but I highly recommend it if at all possible.

John and I spent last weekend in San Diego, and we had so much fun

Friday, we went to the San Diego temple.  It is just as pretty inside.

After our time in the temple, we went to Old Town San Diego for dinner.  We also stopped by the Mormon Battalion Visitor's Center.  In 1846, the United States asked the church to send over 500 volunteers to assist with the Mexican-American War.  The men marched 2000 miles and arrived in San Diego early in 1847.

We stayed at the Balboa Park Inn, a quirky bed and breakfast, where each room has a different theme.  We slept in the Jungle Nook:

As you can tell, the inn owners went overboard with the decor.  I can't imagine the hours it took just to paint the room, let alone find all the animal statues.

We probably should have visited the San Diego Zoo on Saturday, but we did see wildlife during a whale watching trip.  It would have been tricky to get good photos, so you'll just have to imagine the 4 mom/baby pairs of grey whales.

Saturday afternoon, we browsed through antique stores.  That evening, we went to the National Comedy Theatre.  They have troupes in New York City and in San Diego, and I recommend seeing a performance if you have a chance.  They are all improv, take suggestions from the audience, and bill themselves as a clean show.

Sunday we attended church, walked through Balboa Park a bit, then headed home.  The weekend passed much too quickly, but we enjoyed our time together--and look forward to our next getaway!

Thanks for 26 wonderful years of marriage.

  1. What a fun sounding trip! The room sure is like a jungle, isn't it?! How cute! Great picture of the two of you! Good for you in getting away....I agree, it is such a necessity.

  2. What a wonderful trip! And the jungle room was, well, very jungle-y :)

I totally agree that parents need couple time. Every now and then, my boyfriend and I go away just the two of us, and it is always so relaxing and adds stories and memories to our relationship. I think the kids get a bit jealous, but we always share the pictures with them and take trips with them too. It's a good balance.

  3. Weekend getaways and date nights are a must for any marriage.

Yikes, it must have been strange to wake up and see the elephant staring down at you.

  4. That most certainly was a quirky room. I don't know if I could have slept very well with an elephant trunk dangling over my head. :)
Improv comedy shows are my favorite kind of comedy. They are such smart, talented performers.
I agree whole-heartedly with couples taking time for themselves. Glad you had a fun trip!

  6. LOL, look at that room! Our kids used to get "grossed out" when we hugged and kissed in front of them. Yes, it's important for them to see a good husband/wife relationship. Glad you had a nice trip.

  7. Congratulations on 26 years! You are right -- parents do need time to just be a couple. I am so glad we are close enough both geographically and emotionally, that we get to babysit often so that they can do just that. They are on year 13 and I like to think we helped!

  8. Congratulations on 26 years of marriage, Kristi! San Diego is a wonderful place to spend some time. We haven't been in awhile, but used to go fairly often when our son and family lived there. We were only 3 hours away when we lived in Yuma, and it was a great place to spend the day and get out of the AZ heat!

I think not only couples with younger families but also those of us "empty nesters," need to get away from the everyday "to do's." Glad you had such a great time!

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...

Ten Things of Thankful: Live from Oregon, part 2

stock photo of old computer monitor When I was 10 or 11, I remember sitting next to my dad in our living room and reading computer code to him as he entered it into an Apple computer. We would finish the exercise and he would hit enter (or was it "run"?) and wait expectantly for the green type to appear on the screen. If we were lucky, the whole conversation would occur. Most often, there would be an error either in my dictation of the code, or in the typing of the code. We would then go painstakingly back through the lines, character by character, to find and correct the error. After what seemed like hours (and might have been), we would succeed and the computer would finally run the entire program. It was magical! My dad designed and built an earth-sheltered, passive solar home decades before solar panels were commonplace. He also was on a 9-month waiting list for a Prius, when hybrids were not seen on every street.  While my dad is definitely on the cutting edge of technol...

Ten Things of Thankful: Oregon Edition, Part 3

A western bluebird, sitting at the base of a house window, looks inside Thanks (1) to those who have sent well-wishes for my mom's recovery. Her wrist is healing up nicely. I met a friend from high school for lunch this past week. It was so nice to have a chance to visit with her for a couple of hours. She is one of those friends who it doesn't matter how much time has passed, we can pick right back up into meaningful conversations. Lunch ended all too soon, but I'm so thankful (2) for her, and I'm thankful (3) that she reminded me of the importance of reaching out to others.  Being in my parents' home this week, visiting with a long-time (I'm not saying old!) friend, and with Mother's Day tomorrow, my mind naturally reflects upon the women in my life. I'm thankful (4) for an incredible mom--a gentle woman who taught and loved and guided us (and still does.) I'm thankful (5) for grandmas who were different in their personalities but united in their...
