Thursday Thoughts: Exercise Update

If you have been following my blog, you might remember that I signed up to run a 10 K to be held later this year.  I will humor myself and imagine that you have been wondering, "So, Kristi, how is the training going?"



I started following the "Couch to 5 K" program, which does what it says.  The program is designed so that someone can go, in nine weeks,  from being a couch potato to running a 5 K.  (I do use the term "run" loosely, though.  "Jog" is much more applicable in my case.)  Currently I am using the Hal Higdon 10K novice training program to move beyond a 5 K distance (3.1 miles) to a 10 K (6.2 miles).  

I can't say that I wake up and think, "Oh, goodie!  I get to run today!"  However, I don't have to mentally battle with myself as much as I used to, so I guess that's progress.  Sometimes I even think that I'm enjoying myself during the run, as opposed to just feeling good afterwards that I survived.  

Now, to be honest, I do utilize distraction.  I run on the treadmill, underneath the ceiling fan, in front of the TV, with oldest daughter holding the remote so she can fast-forward through commercials for me.  I might need to move beyond TV shows to movies, though, as I run longer distances.  Any recommendations?  (Nothing R-rated, please.)

  1. I don't watch a lot of movies, so I'm not much help.

    Glad to hear your training is going well. Running (even jogging) are not on my "to do" list, but I love fast walking. It would take me forever to finish the race.

  2. Wish I could think of a movie recomendation but nothing comes to mind? I usually listen to music when I run. It distracts my brain a lot easier then the tv does. Are you able to run outside? That can be very stimulating as well. Keep up the great work!

  3. Keep it up Kristi! I can't think of any good recent movies to recommend either. We've been watching a lot of old Disney and Shirley Temple movies but they aren't for everyone and I don't know how motivating they would be. But do keep up the good work.

  4. Sorry Kristi. I don't watch tv so I am no help. I do congratulate you though on the couch to 5k! That's awesome! I tried it two years ago, blew out my knee and now am advised against running so no running for me anymore. Keep up the great work, you CAN do this!

    Good for you, going for the 10K. I don't know the last time I didn't watch a movie. If you want to go with old favorites, "Rudy" will keep you running.

Ten Things of Thankful: Another Trip Around the Sun

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

  Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another
