Friday Family History: The Three-Year-Old in the Kitchen

Oldest daughter had the spotlight last week.  This week, oldest son (having given permission), gets one of his adventures featured on the blog.
At the time of this story, I was a young stay-at-home mom to two children.  My days were filled with all the typical activities that accompany young children.  I loved my kids, but I also welcomed the days I could converse with adults, too.

This particular day, a couple of my friends came to visit.  We were in the living room chatting, and oldest son was quietly playing in another room.  (In retrospect, I should have known better than to trust quiet playtime.) Oldest daughter must have been down for a nap.  As my friends' visit came to an end, I walked them to the door.  The layout of that split-level house was rather strange, and required walking by the kitchen to get to the front door.  As we passed the kitchen, I glanced in to see my entire kitchen covered in a white, powdery substance.  Oldest son was in the middle of the floor, ready to demonstrate to us what exactly had happened.

"Look, Mom!  I'm playing dragon!"

He filled his mouth with a handful of flour, then blew out as hard as he could.  My own "fire-breathing dragon" sent "smoke" billowing throughout the kitchen.  One of my friends, who had a few more years of parenting experience, laughed and told me what a creative, intelligent boy I had.  I think my other friend's reaction mirrored my own--some strange combination of exhaustion and amusement.

My friends left, I de-floured the kitchen, and our day continued.  The dragon never returned, though oldest son never stopped surprising and delighting us.

What surprises have greeted you when your kids have been quietly playing?
Thanks for creative children everywhere!

  3. Thanks for the cute story. Oh that quiet time - I remember thinking "It's Quiet" in horror and racing to stop any "surprises" my kids would be creating. Life sure is fun!

  4. Good one!! Oh boy, I just can imagine what that must have looked like... I guess I would have had a panic attack. LOL... Just be glad he didn't tried it with gasoline and a match.

  5. Oh boy! That must have been fun to clean up! My husband and I thought our toddler daughters were playing quietly in their room as we slept in a bit one Saturday morning.... When we decided to check on the silence, we walked into the living room to find every record album we owned (probably over 100) out of their jackets and scattered across the living room floor!! We didn't make that mistake again!

  6. I can't even imagine trying to clean up all that flour! Oh my!

The disaster quiet moment... my daughter was about 4 and had been in her room playing with a neighbor girl who was 6. They were writing the alphabet on the wall with red nail polish. Her friend tried blaming it all on her but was busted by her own neat lettering!

  8. What a smart kiddo, even if it was rather messy. I think I just might suggest my grandson do the same and be a fire-breathing dragon — outside, though, of course!

Thank you so much for linking up to the GRAND Social! Please excuse my tardy visit! I'm delighted you joined! ♥

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
