Ten Things of Thankful: Running Edition

Today John and I ran another 10 K at Disneyland.  I had not trained much, as I was trying to heal what is developing into a chronic case of plantar fasciitis.   I'm now icing my foot and hoping for a speedy recovery.  Here is my quicker-than-my-run Ten Things of Thankful:

1.  I'm thankful that the weather cooperated.  As we left the hotel room this morning to report to our corral, we were greeted with a steady rain.  Though I love rain, and the concept of running in the rain was novel and somewhat appealing, I imagine that in reality, the novelty would have worn off somewhere in the first mile. Fortunately, the rain stopped before the race even started.

2.  I'm thankful that though I hadn't done a lot of any running in weeks, I could breathe and run--even on the uphill stretches.  Gotta love living at a higher altitude and running at sea level!

3. I'm thankful for comfy running shoes.  Good cushioning makes a huge difference with my feet.

4.  I'm thankful for costuming help.  I ran in wings again--it was the Tinkerbell run--but this time, I learned there is a "proper" way to run in wings.  It involves tying the straps to a racer-back, and pinning the wings to your shirt.  I didn't feel the wings at all.  No more wing bobbing!

5.  I'm thankful for Ivy, who shared information with me on how to care for my feet--even though I ignored the "ease back into running" part.  If she decides to chide me for making a 10 K my first run in weeks, she will certainly be justified.  I'm hoping, though, for the "How to Heal and Train for Your First Half-Marathon Before September" lecture.

6.  I'm thankful for the encouragement of the little buzz of a Fitbit, alerting me that I had completed my 10,000 steps before breakfast!

7.  I'm thankful that the health expo held the day before the run had a booth with the BFF Miracle Body Buffer.  That sounds so unlike anything I would buy, but it is fabulous for sore legs and feet! John told me to pick one up, and it makes a huge difference.  (The link is simply to their website; it is not an affiliate link.  If you ever want to purchase one, though, I would recommend finding them at a health expo; the savings is considerable.)

8.  I'm thankful that John and I were able to post a good-for-us time.  I have to look at our past race times, but this might have been a PR for us.

9.  Though not run related, I'm thankful for my mom, John's mom, and my grandma. Happy Mother's Day!  I'm also thankful for my children.  They make me proud to be their mom!

10.  As always, I'm thankful for John.  He ran with me in the Tinkerbell run.  Of all the Disneyland runs, the Tinkerbell run is the race with the fewest men, but John was happy to be Captain Hook to my Tinkerbell.

  3. Happy Mother's Day, Kristi. Hope the chronic plantar fasciitis gets under control fast, I know it hurts as my good friend suffers from it. She claims running doesn't hurt as much as walking does.

    1. It is an odd thing; the first few steps are the worst. Yesterday after the race I could barely hobble around. Fortunately, today is much, much better. I think I need to make sure to give myself adequate time to heal and then EASE back into running.

  4. It seems you just had a bit of a taper before your big 10k, as all good runners do. I'm quite impressed by your ability to just jump in and run a 10k without completely training for it.(Even though you shouldn't have.) Hope those feet feel better soon.
Running in a warm rain is fun. I always liked it. It's the cold rain that is miserable. Have you ever even been in a cold rain?

  5. I used to have problems with plantar fasciitis years ago, but then it stopped and kind of never came back. I'm very glad for that, although I really don't understand why. Hope your feet feel better fast!

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...

Ten Things of Thankful: Live from Oregon, part 2

stock photo of old computer monitor When I was 10 or 11, I remember sitting next to my dad in our living room and reading computer code to him as he entered it into an Apple computer. We would finish the exercise and he would hit enter (or was it "run"?) and wait expectantly for the green type to appear on the screen. If we were lucky, the whole conversation would occur. Most often, there would be an error either in my dictation of the code, or in the typing of the code. We would then go painstakingly back through the lines, character by character, to find and correct the error. After what seemed like hours (and might have been), we would succeed and the computer would finally run the entire program. It was magical! My dad designed and built an earth-sheltered, passive solar home decades before solar panels were commonplace. He also was on a 9-month waiting list for a Prius, when hybrids were not seen on every street.  While my dad is definitely on the cutting edge of technol...

Ten Things of Thankful: Oregon Edition, Part 3

A western bluebird, sitting at the base of a house window, looks inside Thanks (1) to those who have sent well-wishes for my mom's recovery. Her wrist is healing up nicely. I met a friend from high school for lunch this past week. It was so nice to have a chance to visit with her for a couple of hours. She is one of those friends who it doesn't matter how much time has passed, we can pick right back up into meaningful conversations. Lunch ended all too soon, but I'm so thankful (2) for her, and I'm thankful (3) that she reminded me of the importance of reaching out to others.  Being in my parents' home this week, visiting with a long-time (I'm not saying old!) friend, and with Mother's Day tomorrow, my mind naturally reflects upon the women in my life. I'm thankful (4) for an incredible mom--a gentle woman who taught and loved and guided us (and still does.) I'm thankful (5) for grandmas who were different in their personalities but united in their...
