Throwback Thursday: Birthday Girl

My sister's birthday is coming up soon, so I thought it appropriate that I use a not-so-old photo for this Throwback Thursday post.
(Did you catch that nice wording, sister?  You don't mind that I posted this photo, do you?)

This particular photo takes me back to my childhood.  Birthdays were celebrated with a homemade cake Mom baked, served on the table Dad made, inside the house that Dad built.  (Well, the table and house part was true after we moved, when I was in high school.) We had no TV, but my parents were not opposed to technology, as witnessed by the computer in the background of the photo.

I'm headed up to Oregon next week (attention, any would-be thieves:  John is staying here; the house will not be vacant), and will stay in the house that Dad built, and eat at the table Dad made. My sister has grown up, married, and moved out, so there will be no birthday cake.  The computer is gone, but others have appeared over the years.  And--gasp!--a TV now resides there, too.

Some things change, but much remains the same.  So, Sis:
It makes me think of the good old days
Happy birthday to you
You sure grew out of your baby ways
Happy birthday to you
(7th 23rd, 92nd) birthday we wish you many more
Health and wealth and friends by the score
Cut the cake and let's eat some more
Happy birthday to you

(I would have posted a video, but I didn't find one on John McCutcheon's youtube channel, and I'm always leery of copyright infringement if the artist didn't post the video.)

How did you celebrate birthdays when you were a child?

Thanks to my sister, and for phones that allow the miles between us to disappear.

  1. Aw, what a sweet post for your sister. Enjoy your visit to your parents' house. I'm impressed with the computer. We had tv and an Atari, but a computer didn't enter the house until after I left for college.

    1. My dad is a retired school teacher. He jumped on the computer bandwagon pretty quickly. I have fond memories of sitting next to him, reading computer code as we programmed together. We had a TV when I was little, but then we got rid of it. We never had an atari. My parents got a TV again (with satellite, no less!) after we kids all grew up, and they even have a wii now! :-)

  3. Is she using your brother's Webelos scarf as a napkin? How fun to remember fun times.

    1. Ah, leave it to a den leader to spot the Webelos scarf! Actually, it was used as a blindfold. I don't remember why we had her blindfolded, but something was a surprise, and the Webelos scarf made a convenient blindfold.

    1. I still remember when John and I got our first hooked-up-to-the-internet computer. It was like magic!

  5. Thanks, Kristi! I don't mind at all. :-)

I am not positive, but I think the surprise was one of the guests (Lisa).

    1. You are probably right. I cropped the photo to just include you (since I'm not in touch with your childhood friends to ask if they minded that I publish their photo online), but it was Sarah that I cropped out. I was surprised, because I thought Lisa was there. She probably was, but I don't have a photo to prove it.

  6. What a cute picture and Happy Birthday to your sister! Staying in the home your Dad built must feel wonderful. December was birthday month for us in that my birthday, Dad's and my sister all fall within 2 weeks -- that also include Christmas and New Years!

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
