Tuesday Time to Tackle: Education Week Planning

Every year, Brigham Young University holds  Education Week, where thousands of adults and teens from all over the world come to attend classes, hear performances, and generally be inspired.   I attend as often as I can, and I will be there this year.

OK, so it wasn't taken at Education Week, and it's nowhere near current, but it was taken on campus!

In late June, the course catalog was posted online.   Now I get to pour over it and decide which classes to attend.  In the past, I have attended courses about topics as varied as Abraham Lincoln, teaching piano, the history of the LDS church in Africa, the Dead Sea Scrolls, financial planning, and home organization, to name a few.

While at-the-door registration is an option, I like to sign up ahead of time.  Although I register for the week, I do not have to select classes ahead of time.  It's simply first-come, first-served, and if a class is full, I just move on to another class.  In reality, the classrooms are huge, and most of the time if a classroom is filled, BYU has overflow rooms set up, so the class can be viewed life via video.  Most of the time I have been able to get into the classes I wanted to attend.

Often, though not this year, my mom will attend with me.  We spend hours deciding what to do, then change our plans several times.  Which classes we plan and which classes we really attend are never completely the same.  John and my dad get a kick out of the number of phone calls my mom and I make as we try to figure out our schedules.  Even though my mom isn't going this year, I'll probably still discuss my schedule with her.

"What do you know about this teacher?"

"What do you think about this class?"

"When in the world will I take my lunch break? There are too many classes I want to take!"

Oh, the "problems" of planning!

What fun plans do you have for the rest of the summer?

Thanks for BYU for holding Education Week, and for the hundreds of presenters and thousands of classes from which to choose!

  2. I love learning -- any kind of learning! Sounds like you are going to have a wonderful week and how great that you and your Mom CAN so easily stay in touch even though she can't be there.

  3. Sounds like fun! We have a big reunion with my family in Aug and are deciding on activities and FHE lessons and we have to cook a big dinner once during the week for everyone, so trying to decide on that, too! Have fun! Who are you going with this year? Maybe one year we could go together. :-)

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
