Ten Things of Thankful: Thanksgiving Birthday and Other Things


Do I need to say that I love Thanksgiving?  Though there were only 13 around the table this year (plus a baby), the house was full of love, laughter, and food.  Let's jump right into the list for the week:
1.  I'm thankful that everyone arrived safely.  While I wouldn't say I'm an obsessive worrier, I'm always happy when everyone has been able to make it from point A to point B without incident.  

 2.  I'm thankful for easy-going house guests.  I don't think this needs elaboration.  

 3.  I'm thankful that I've hosted Thanksgiving for years, so the dinner preparations are a familiar routine, rather than a stressful panic.

 4.  I'm thankful for helpers.  I didn't provide all the food, and I didn't have to spend Thursday alone in the kitchen.

 5.  I'm thankful for leftovers.  The weekend's meals need no planning--just open the fridge, and there they are!

 6.  I'm thankful for time spent together.  We talk, laugh, play games, go places, watch movies, and just generally have a good time together.

 7.  I'm thankful that my kids who weren't here for Thanksgiving, were able to celebrate Thanksgiving together at the home of my daughter-in-law's parents.  Kids grow up and move away, and I understand that.  I'm just glad they weren't alone for the holidays.

 8.  I'm thankful for my grandchildren.  Oldest granddaughter turned three on Thanksgiving day, and I loved watching her delight with the birthday festivities.

 9.  I'm thankful for the beauty all around.  The moon was especially beautiful this week.

10.  As always, I'm thankful for John, but Thanksgiving is an especially good time to remember how nice it is to journey through life together.

    Happy Birthday! My parents were married on Thanksgiving...it didnt fall on it this year but we always hear about how they went to the Macys parade on their honeymoon!... #5 made me laugh ... because I was away for the holiday and this morning I was back home...went to feed skip and didnt even have dog food in the house!

      Drexel's been a little confused this weekend. I think he gauges his meal times based on ours, and because there has been a lot of "grazing" going on by people, he has been giving us the "Didn't you forget to feed me?" look much more frequently than usual. I trust you were able to round up something to satisfy Skip. :-)

    The pie rack is fabulous and is one of those "why didn't I think of that" moments. I'm glad your family was able to gather at your home for the celebrations.

      My father-in-law is pretty talented in coming up with solutions to problems. My mother-in-law volunteered to bring pies, but didn't know how they would travel.

    Those pie crusts look like the start of something beautiful! Our Canadian Thanksgiving is a bit earlier, but I do enjoy the 'gift free' holidays. Not that I mind giving gifts, but the pressure of it at Christmas takes some of the shine off of the family part of it. We do a dinner for New Year's day that I actually prefer.

      Those crusts were for pumpkin pies. John's grandma's recipe has the filling cooked separately from the crusts, then combined at the last minute.

    hey good-sounding Thanksgiving (really liked the multiple pie rack thing…) I would suggest that pies are (nearly) at the heart of Thanksgiving.
    Una enjoyed the meal… lol

    Thanksgiving is a great holiday, isn't it? So glad you were able to have a house full, even if it wasn't everyone.

    "Only 13". Holy smokes! sounds like a pretty big crowd to me lol Glad you had help with everything Kristi.
    I too am totally in awe of the pie plate rack thingy! Very cool.
    Happy Birthday to your Granddaughter! She appears quite intent on gathering all her wishes before blowing out the candles on her birthday pie :D

      I guess I misspoke--14, including the baby. 13 place settings. When the kids all lived here, we had 7 for dinner every night, so 13 (or 14) isn't that many more. :-) In years past, we had more extended family come, so this really was a smaller group. I guess size is relative--literally, in this case! :-)

    Your #1 thankful makes me smile. I wasn't a compulsive worrier either, but like you was/am always glad when people arrived safely to their destinations. That pie rack is such a great idea! I've never seen one. I'm sure that pumpkin pie was ever as much enjoyed as a birthday cake! What a great moon shot!

    Glad you had such a wonderful Thanksgiving and I love that pie rack! The Kids spent Thanksgiving with Justin's family and Saturday with us! I am thankful for both!

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

  A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some.
