Ten Things of Thankful: Sunny Days

It rained earlier this week, which didn't cause any problems where we live, but prompted TV stations to launch "Storm Watches," with one reporter announcing, "We saw some people with umbrellas, and drivers used their windshield wipers." So that's what those things are for! 

However, the rain has stopped and the sun has come out, and it's a perfect time to join the Ten Things of Thankful blog hop! 

1. I'm thankful for lovely views. That photo at the top of this post? That's the view I have every time I drive home from town. I had to stop and take a photo so I could share it with you. I love seeing mountains and even some greenery. 

2. I'm thankful for youngest granddaughter, and getting a glimpse into her world. The other day, I gave Baby-baby some blueberries. She looked at them then asked me if I could "take the eye out." I will never look at blueberries quite the same! She thought the indentation where the fruit attaches to the bush was an eye. I assured her that it wasn't an eye and that it was safe to eat. Cutting the blueberry in half seemed to help.

3. I'm thankful for Drexel in general, and specifically this week that:
  • (4) He has puppy friends to play with here. In the photo below, he is standing next to a 7 month old Armenian Gympr. I had never heard of that breed of dog before moving here. They are livestock guard dogs and they are HUGE! 

  • (5) I found some new toys for Drexel. Although I brought some for him when we moved here, I wanted to get some more for him to play with while I'm gone to my parents' house. I was able to find one that looks like a banana--his absolutely favorite fruit!
  • (6) I was able to find a basket to hold his toys. I visited the women's club thrift store again, and they had just the right sized basket! Photo below of Drexel and his toys.

Speaking of the thrift store, while I was there, another customer thought she had lost her phone in the store. I offered to call her number to see if she could hear it ringing. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in locating it. After I got home, I got a call from her. She had found her phone in her car, and called my number back to thank me for trying to help her and to let me know she found her phone. She told me that she was reminded that there are lots of good people in the world.

7. I'm thankful that my attempt to assist in locating a phone (which really didn't take any effort) helped a stranger, even if it didn't help her actually find the phone she was looking for. We never know when our small kindnesses will make a difference to someone.

8. I'm thankful for Facebook groups. My great-aunt passed away this week, and due to a Facebook family reunion group, relatives have been able to post photos and other memories and share condolences with her immediate family. 

9. I'm thankful for newspapers.com. I was able to learn (and share) more about my great-aunt's life by reading about her in old newspapers. Small town old newspapers are full of information! For example, I learned that my great-aunt reupholstered a chair and entered it into the county fair when she was a teenager and part of Future Homemakers of America. 

10. I'm thankful for John, and I'm thankful he's feeling much better now.

    I'm also thankful you are both feeling better.

    The view is delightful.

    The Littles say the most fun things, don't they.

    Drexel looks happy and healthy and as if he enjoys his life, which I'm sure he does.

    seeing how Mimi's here, I'll multi-purpose my comment (conservation is never out-of-style)... the concept of miracles is, all too often, shackled by culture and made to seem impossibly rare in their occurrence. The hardest thing about practicing to see miracles (in every day life) is overcoming the 'this is silly' voice in our heads* when we look around and see the world.

    *we all get one and, along with too much of our individual selfs, give up as we mature into ...err mature adults lol

    Losing your phone is heart stopping! Glad she found it and touched that the woman called you to let you know. I would have always wondered if it turned up! Turn the blueberry over and show Baby-Baby the blueberry's belly button!

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

  A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. Tuesday Time to Tackle: DIY Swamp Cooler Pump Replacement

Yesterday morning, despite having the swamp cooler on all night long, we woke up to 81 degree temperatures inside the house.  John went outside to inspect and announced that the swamp cooler pump had stopped working. Fortunately, replacing the pump is a quick and simple do-it-yourself project.
