Ten Things of Thankful: I've Taken a Detour, but Have Now Returned

Shadow of a child holding hands and walking between a man and woman

My last previous post was November 6, 2020, over 18 months ago. A LOT happened during that time, and at the same time, A LOT didn't happen. Time passed agonizingly slowly and also in the blink of an eye. Our empty nest became very full, but is now empty once again. I'm so rusty at blogging I nearly had to do a google search to remember where I needed to go to even compose a post! However, I still remember how to be thankful, and here are some of the things I have been thankful for over the past year-and-a-half:

1. I am thankful for modern appliances. My washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher have been running multiple times a day over the past year or so, and I am truly thankful they have held up. And robotic vacuums (multiple levels in the house=multiple vacuums) also deserve much praise. (In fact, as I was  replacing a well-worn brush from a vacuum a month or so ago, a little voice next to me said, "It's so beautiful!" It is, buddy, it is.)

2. Following the "How do I keep things relatively clean?" theme, I am thankful for all-weather floor liners for the car. Worth every penny!

3. I am thankful for teachers. I have met so many great, dedicated teachers this past year and their level of compassion and willingness to go the extra mile for their students is truly heart-warming.

4. I am thankful for individuals and organizations that support families and children. I have felt so much support over the past 18 months from the "village." There are so many good people in the world!

5. I am thankful for the chance to see the world through children's eyes. The world is a truly amazing place and I have loved sharing places, experiences, and knowledge with little ones. (Note to all Sunday School teachers of youngsters: In teaching about the 10 Commandments, you might need to explain that Moses didn't break a computer, because the "tablet" was just a big rock!)

6. I am thankful for my grandparents. I've gained new insights into their lives and a deeper appreciation for the experiences they had.

7. I am thankful for health. Though we had our fair share of illnesses, we escaped the dreaded covid until this week. Covid is so much easier to handle when the nest is empty. Still not a fan of being sick, but things could be so much worse.

8. Which leads me to:  I'm thankful for vaccines, boosters, and medications that are working to keep our covid experience fairly mild. Millions of others had a difference experience, and while vaccines and medications aren't a guarantee of a good outcome, I am thankful for things that help keep us healthy.

9. I'm thankful for sleep. It's been a precious commodity over the past year, and I am thankful to be catching up on some zzzz's.

10. I am thankful for John. Our life hasn't always taken us down the roads we envisioned, but as John says, "Life's an adventure, and adventures usually work out." I'm thankful for our adventure.

I'd love to read your own Ten Things of Thankful post! Link up here: https://tenthingsofthankful.blogspot.com/2022/07/give-us-just-slice.html.

    1. Oh, it took me a second to figure that one out: "We learned about Moses going up the Mountain Sinai and he came down and broke the computer." It was all I could do to keep from laughing!

Thank you! It's good to be back!

  2. Are my letters appearing in Comments?
    lol
These variables between browsers and blog platforms will surely turn my hair white(r).
Very good to read you again.
Like Mimi, got a kick out of Number 5.
Not particularly a fan of the Grateful Dead, but they did contribute a song lyric that is most apropos,
    Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it's been

    1. I'm having to relearn how to blog and post/reply to comments, too. Thanks for taking the time to figure it out and comment!

I have to agree with you about the lyrics.

  3. I am so thankful you returned to your blog to write this gratitude list! I'm sorry you caught COVID eventually. Then again, I don't think there's any escaping it at all, but I'm glad being fully vaccinated and boosted and having access to medication helped you get a relatively mild case of it.

  5. You're back, you're back, you're baaaaaaack! I've thought of you SO OFTEN and said many prayers for your nest. Hoping the fact that it's empty is due to a positive reunification. Sorry you got the dreaded Covid and hope it's not hitting you too hard. I felt like I had mono when I had it, but it was only like that for a few days. Glad I was vaccinated and boosted or it probably would have been much worse. LOVE the comment about the ten commandments!

Ten Things of Thankful: Live from Oregon, part 2

stock photo of old computer monitor When I was 10 or 11, I remember sitting next to my dad in our living room and reading computer code to him as he entered it into an Apple computer. We would finish the exercise and he would hit enter (or was it "run"?) and wait expectantly for the green type to appear on the screen. If we were lucky, the whole conversation would occur. Most often, there would be an error either in my dictation of the code, or in the typing of the code. We would then go painstakingly back through the lines, character by character, to find and correct the error. After what seemed like hours (and might have been), we would succeed and the computer would finally run the entire program. It was magical! My dad designed and built an earth-sheltered, passive solar home decades before solar panels were commonplace. He also was on a 9-month waiting list for a Prius, when hybrids were not seen on every street.  While my dad is definitely on the cutting edge of technol...

Ten Things of Thankful: Oregon Edition, Part 3

A western bluebird, sitting at the base of a house window, looks inside Thanks (1) to those who have sent well-wishes for my mom's recovery. Her wrist is healing up nicely. I met a friend from high school for lunch this past week. It was so nice to have a chance to visit with her for a couple of hours. She is one of those friends who it doesn't matter how much time has passed, we can pick right back up into meaningful conversations. Lunch ended all too soon, but I'm so thankful (2) for her, and I'm thankful (3) that she reminded me of the importance of reaching out to others.  Being in my parents' home this week, visiting with a long-time (I'm not saying old!) friend, and with Mother's Day tomorrow, my mind naturally reflects upon the women in my life. I'm thankful (4) for an incredible mom--a gentle woman who taught and loved and guided us (and still does.) I'm thankful (5) for grandmas who were different in their personalities but united in their...

Ten Things of Thankful: I Should Blog More Often

Tall red poppies bloom against the brick remains of an old homestead A couple of weeks ago, John and I hiked in Alpine, Utah, to see the poppy gardens near the old Lambert homestead. We knew if we waited, we would miss the peak of the flowers. One minute, flowers are blooming, and the next minute, that particular floral show is over until next year.  The Ten Things of Thankful blog hop runs every week, but sometimes I miss the boat and don't get a post composed. I find, though, that those weeks that I do join in, I'm more apt to look for (and find!) the good in life--regardless of whether it was a "good" week or a "bad" week. Just as taking time to hike pays off with a beautiful view, taking the time to share ten things I'm thankful for pays off with a feeling of peace, satisfaction, and gratitude.  The past three weeks have been spent at home. It's been so nice to catch up on things here. The air conditioner cools the house again, we've taken ...
