Ten Things of Thankful: I Stopped my Mouse from Zooming and Other Thankfuls

Life can't be Disneyland and the zoo every week.  This week I settled down to more serious business. I'm thankful. . .

1.  . . . that because of google, I figured out how to stop my new laptop from seemingly randomly zooming in and out.  Fixing that has saved me time and decreased annoyance.  (In case you have the same problem with Windows 10 and want to fix it, go to settings, devices, mouse and touchpad, additional mouse options, click "settings" under devices,  and uncheck "multifinger gestures.")

2.  . . . that General Conference is this weekend.  CAN'T WAIT!  I've read that General Conference is to Mormons what the Pope's visit is to Catholics, or that General Conference is like a marathon of TED talks.  All I know is that when I pay attention to conference, it seems that many of the conference messages address topics that have been on my mind.  I often get ideas about changes or improvements for my life--not necessarily from the words I hear, but the thoughts that come to my mind while I'm listening.  I hope that makes sense.  Anyway, you are all invited. The conference will be streamed live at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. MDT on the homepage at lds.org. The sessions will also be archived here.  (In fact, last week's women's session can be viewed there already.)

3.   . . . for time at home.  I had a bit more time at home this week than I normally do.  My kitchen is clean.  My floors are vacuumed. I love a clean house!

4.  . . . that my friend is out of the hospital.  I stopped by the hospital this week, and she said she was being discharged that day. I'm going to call her house today and see if she'd like a short visit.

5.  . . . that I finished reading The Book of Mormon for the I-don't-know-how-manyeth time.  I was reminded again of how prayer is key to feeling and developing a love of Christ.
". . . Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love, which love endureth by diligence unto prayer. . ." Moroni 8:26

6.  . . . for COOLER temperatures!  We are now in the 80's, with a forecast high on Sunday in the 70's, with the possibility of rain!  Oh please, oh please, oh please. . .

7.  . . . for seeing the scale head in the right direction again, and having community support without any shaming when the scale heads north.  Come join us, if you'd like.  Don't worry--you don't have to divulge everything!  I'm definitely of the "only show the ones and tenths" persuasion.  2milerun.wordpress.com

8. . . . for making progress on annoying projects.  Paperwork-type tasks can take so much time!  This week's projects:  cleaning out my e-mail inbox, putting together a "How to manage the financial household" spreadsheet for John, and researching health insurance plans. (Our grandmothered--how is this different from grandfathered?--plan is officially ending this year. I'm not happy about that, but oh, well.  At least we live in a time and place where health care is available.)

9.  . . . for the moon!  I couldn't capture the eclipse well at all.  (Murphy's Law applied, as our skies were cloudy.  Our skies are NEVER cloudy!) On Monday, though, I happened to be outside (without my camera) when the moon was just making its appearance over the horizon.  WOW. WOW. WOW. Such a gorgeous sight!

10.  . . . for John.  He has worked about a million hours this week, poor guy.  Fortunately, he works from home, so he doesn't have to commute, and we do still see each other throughout the day, but still, I know he would prefer not to put in the number of hours this week has demanded.  Hang in there, honey!

What about you?  Has it been a work week, or more of a play week?  What are you thankful for?

  1. I, too, have enjoyed a week at home without any other commitments. I've been able to finish, start, and work on projects that I have long neglected. I'm thankful for workmen who return phone calls - not many do that anymore.

    1. It is nice when someone calls back. I don't think I will ever run out of projects, but it is nice to be able to work on them a bit.

  2. I love the cooler temperatures! We were down low enough I turned the furnace on for a bit today. It makes sleeping so much nicer.

My biggest issue with my laptop is I would love to disable the touch pad completely. I think that should happen automatically whenever a mouse is plugged in. I'm glad you fixed your issue.

    1. I agree--why would the touch pad still function when a mouse is plugged in? Is there no way to disable it? Frustrating!

    2. There is, but whenever I try to do it, it doesn't "stick". So I wind up with my cursor appearing in random places as I'm typing...

    3. That would be frustrating!

    4. Hey V… try going to control panel>touchpad?lower left is (a box to check) disable when USB plugged in (the wireless for the mouse)…. I had that same problem with my laptop

  3. I'm also thankful for the cooler weather in October.
    Have a wonderful weekend, Kristi.

  4. We have between 6 and 8 soccer games today, depending on how they do. The forecast is a high of 56, wind, and rain. Can't say I'm happy about the weather. I'm happy for you, though! :)
I had two days of being home during the day. The first one, as soon as the kids walked in the door from school, one said, "you cleaned!" Yup, it is nice to have a clean house.
I hope John's schedule eases up a bit next week.

    1. That is a lot of games! I'll be thinking of you today. It's always windy here, but I can't remember how many months it's been since our high was only 56! And rain? Well, I'm hoping we actually do get some this weekend. It's so nice to come home to a clean house! John's schedule probably will ease up in 2 weeks, so he has one more week of craziness first.

  5. sounds like a good week, even if it's getting, like Arctic weather and all (lol… no! I'm not jealous of your climate…much!)
thanks for 'Kristi's Rule' at the Gravity Challenge… it's a touch that I would not have thought of but surely make people feel more comfortable (not such a stretch that you thought of it? lol) you do have that way with people

    1. We're entering the too-cool-for-the-swamp-cooler and too-warm-for-the-furnace time. Hopefully it lasts a long time!
Well, Kristi's rule certainly made me feel more comfortable--glad it helped others, too!

  6. I am contemplating a new computer with Windows 10 (I have 7 now). I know who I shall ask for help. I wish I could send you some of the buckets of rain that are falling here. The gravity challenge is fun for me, too, thanks to your genius way to take away the stress of the scale. It's a good week to grow one's faith :)

    1. I had Windows 7 previously. Windows 10 has been OK, especially now that I got the zooming fixed. Windows Edge browser doesn't work well for me on all sites, though. I can't add photos to my blog while on Edge, for example. It also prevents me from commenting on some blogs, so I use Chrome instead.
I felt a bit bad pleading for rain, when I know that the eastern states are so inundated with rain right now.
Kristi's rule follows the "Necessity is the mother of invention" saying. :-)
I'm enjoying conference, and looking forward to the next session.

  7. Isn't Google the best tool! I've used it on many an occaision (that and the YouTube) when I don't know how to fix or figure something out. I'll be right behind Val if I ever get to Windows 10 :)
"I often get ideas about changes or improvements for my life--not necessarily from the words I hear, but the thoughts that come to my mind while I'm listening." Makes total sense Kristi. Total sense.
I'd love to send you some of the rain but I'm feeling a little selfish today. I needed a "stay inside, don't need to join the human race if I don't want to" kind of day lol But I'll send it when I'm finished which should be in oh, 4 or 5 hours :D (wish I could really. glad your temps are more comfortable)

    1. Yes, Google and YouTube are wonderful instructional tools!
Glad it made sense. I'm enjoying conference--the first speaker this morning basically said everything I've been thinking lately (only he spoke more eloquently, more thoroughly, and with a German accent!)
If you're just "chillin'" inside today, you should go check out that talk: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/watch/2015/10?lang=eng&vid=4529103258001&cid=4
Hope you can stay dry in the storm!

  8. The "oh, please, oh, please" made me think of an old Far Side cartoon. Did you ever see it? A dog has made arrow signs and a sign that says "Cat Fud" leading to the dryer. He is hiding and watching the cat follow the signs. And the caption is "oh, please, oh, please"

  10. Your thankful posts are always soothing somehow. I know you're enjoying General Conference (that's what the Methodists call their annual meeting, too) from the snippets I've seen you post on Facebook. Yay for cooler temps; I hope you get your rain. We are having some delightfully perfect fall weather lately, with bright blue skies and temps in the 60s and low 70s during the day and down to the mid 40s at night. Glad you got a second chance to see that awesome moon!

    1. Yes, I do, and I've found the more I use it (to track food as well as exercise), the more the scale cooperates with me. Go figure, right?!

  12. Sorry about the insurance situation. Not a fun thing to look forward to. That is crazy that the one night you would have loved to have a picture of the moon, you had clouds. I absolutely loved watching conference! Glad you had some time to address some of those household tasks and could enjoy the results.

  14. Sounds like a productive week, even though there was no Disney or zoo animals in it.
    :-)
Glad you did see the moon. I have been enjoying everybody's descriptions of how they saw it.
I haven't seen well enough to use a mouse with my computer in nearly twenty years. I love my keyboard, but sometimes there are just things that are made easier with a click or two.

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
