Ten Things of Thankful: Christmas in February

The groundhog predicted an early spring; Mother Nature proved she doesn't take orders from a rodent. Snow fell and fell and fell, and it felt more like Christmas than February (thankful #1--the snow was beautiful, I didn't have to go anywhere, and I just enjoyed the quiet day). It also felt like Christmas because some of my children came (thankful #2), and we finally exchanged presents with youngest son and his girlfriend, who couldn't come in December (thankful #3--no more wrapped presents taking up space in my bedroom!)

We laughed a lot and played games (thankful #4). Our house was filled with friends of the kids, and thus even more laughter and games (thankful #5).

Drexel (thankful #6) mysteriously managed to add a blue streak in his fur.

We ate cupcakes in celebration of oldest son's birthday (thankful #7), even though he couldn't join us, so we called him and left a rendition of "Happy Birthday" in his voicemail box. 

We remembered to take a photo (thankful #8), and it only took two takes (thankful #9) to get the picture shown at the top of this post.

Thanks to John (thankful #10) for his ingenuity in rigging up the camera and being a great photographer!

    Enjoyed your TToT, it had that 'old school' style, more narrative than linear... fun.
    Though no fan of snow, I concur that a snowy day can be enjoyable when you don't need to leave the house. And given the mercurial character of the weather these days, it may all melt before week's end.

      Thanks. Some weeks seem to lend themselves to lists; others do better with narrative.
      You're right; most of the snow has melted--just in time for the predicted Sunday storm! :-)

    I love that video and hearing the laughter. It sounds like you had a fun weekend.
    As to the strange blue marking on Drexel's ear, could it be possible he rubbed up against a copper pipe somewhere, one that possibly had some corrosion?

      We did have fun.
      I don't think the blue is from a pipe. The source remains a mystery.

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

  A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip.
