Ten Things of Thankful: I "Tissue" a Merry Christmas

Photo: A Kleenex box sits on a computer keyboard

I suddenly realized that Christmas is less than 3 weeks away. I thought this would be the week I would put up the tree and decorate the house. Instead, John and I have prepared by deciding to get colds out of the way. (It was his idea, or at least he started the sneezing party.) While most people are out buying gifts, I visit Costco for industrial amounts of Kleenex and NyQuil. I keep looking to John to call this party over, but he just keeps snoozing and sniffling. I can afford to lounge around for a couple more days, but I really want my energy back soon. However, I definitely can think of things I am thankful for this week!

1. I'm thankful it is just a cold. It's annoying, but it's just a cold.

2. I'm thankful that because I didn't feel like doing much at all, I cleared out my email inbox! Major, major accomplishment there!

3. I'm thankful to be at the stage of life where I can take time to indulge a cold. I don't have to show up for a job, my children are grown, and the Christmas decorations can wait.

4. I'm thankful for the #LighttheWorld initiative that is happening again this Christmas season. You can sign up for texts with daily service prompts, watch a great Christmas video, learn where the Giving Machines are located this year, and find a nearby church service to attend on the Sunday prior to Christmas. Definitely check it out!

5. I'm thankful for RootsTech, which is scheduled for the last week of February. RootsTech is sponsoring a great giveaway--a free, 4-day pass--for one of my readers. The entry period closes on Monday night, so if you haven't entered yet, be sure to visit this post to enter.

6. Speaking of family history, I'm thankful for sites such as yourdnaguide.com, which has a handy chart and interactive page that helps decipher possible relationships based on dna. It's very useful for adoptees to help them piece together their biological families.

7. I'm thankful that earlier this week, we got our shed installed. We had ordered it back in September, and this was the earliest available delivery date. John is happy to have a shed, and is excited to start moving the lawnmower and snowblower out of the garage (once he has the energy to do that).

8. I'm thankful that also earlier this week (pre-colds) we had a chance to visit with John's parents and one of John's brothers.

9. Also earlier this week (pre-colds), I got to babysit a friend's daughter. There wasn't much to it, as the baby slept the whole time, but I did get to hang out with their dog. (And, since I later came down with a cold, I'm glad I was never even in the same room as the baby, so hopefully she won't get sick!)

10. As always, I'm thankful for John. He thinks he's feeling a bit better today. Maybe tomorrow I will be, too, and we can deck the halls! 🎄

What are you thankful for this week? Have you remembered to enter the RootsTech giveaway? (I learned recently that even if you can't physically attend RootsTech, if you win the giveaway, you can use the voucher to register for a virtual pass! So if you are interested in family history at all, please enter!)

  2. Same here - hope you and John are quickly on the mend! It is surely an annoyance but your "it's just a cold" is an excellent reminder for us all it could be way worse.
Good for you cleaning out your e-mail!! I SO need to tend to that. It's at the point where to open it is now overwhelming, lol
Enjoy the holiday season no matter how long or....short this year :)

    1. Hope you get over your cold soon, too! I'm feeling much better today--I even started decorating!
I can relate to being overwhelmed by emails. I don't like clutter, and an inbox is just that, even if it doesn't physically take up much space.

  3. Here's praying your cold is gone immediately if not sooner, so you can enjoy your Christmas time!

Trust you will follow the advice you enjoy the most*
A shed, that has totally got to be fun. A path to an empty-of-all-but-vehicles garage!

Sleep and fluids in as large quantities as possible! (Couldn't resist lol)

    1. I have to agree with you that sleep and lots of fluids work wonders! I'm feeling much better now.
Empty-of-all-but-vehicles is a lofty goal, but being able to get into/out of said vehicles easier is definitely going to be a plus!

  5. It is great that you can think back to all the places you have been and the people you have been around and feel assured that you were not passing along the pesty cold. Being at a stage where one can actually indulge a cold is a big turning point, and actually quickens the healing.
That must have felt like quite the accomplishment to clear out your email inbox!
I bookmarked the dna link. Their blog looks interesting.
How exciting that you have a shed!

    1. I don't think we infected anyone, and I'm almost to 100% better now.
You have no idea what a task the clearing of the inbox was!
The lawnmower is now in the shed, but we still have to move gardening tools, etc. into it.

  6. This post makes me sneeze. Lol. I have seasonal allergy. So annoying. And then again it is just an allergy.
    Rest up whenever you can.

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
