Ten Things of Thankful: Balancing Out Edition

Photo: An avocado seedling has two branches. The branch on the right is much longer than the one on the left.
Sometime between 1-1/2 to 2 years ago, I decided to plant an avocado pit. It took what seemed like forever, but it finally sent up some green growth. The plant got taller and taller, but did not branch out. I made a drastic decision to prune it back in an effort to encourage some lateral growth. At first, I thought my action would be rewarded, but only one sideways branch developed. The other side remained only a tiny little bud.

I moved the plant outside this summer, so it could soak up some direct sunlight and bask in the warm temperatures. It is enjoying its new locale (and I'm not telling it that it will need to move back indoors in a month or so). A couple of weeks ago, I was delighted to notice that it was finally developing another lateral branch. I'm looking forward to watching it become a more balanced plant.

I love balance; whether it is in the form of real life/blogging, vacation/responsibilities, or exercise/curling up with a book, it's nice to feel balanced. When the scales of life tip one way or another, doing whatever I need to do to achieve balance always feels good. This week, that meant I took care of some chores around the house that needed attention. With those tasks done, I'm feeling better.

This week:

1. I'm thankful for music. There's nothing quite like some energetic tunes to inspire an active day of cleaning.

2. I'm thankful for "a place for everything, and everything in its place." That saying isn't adhered to religiously yet, unless you count "basement" and "garage" as a place, but I'm happy for progress.

3. I'm thankful I got some apricots picked and jam made. You wouldn't know it by looking at the tree (it's still loaded!), but I hope to pick more tomorrow.

4. I'm thankful for a budget. For as long as we've been married, we've kept a budget. Regardless of what the numbers are, there is something satisfying about knowing where the money is, and where it's going.

5. I'm thankful for the ease of voting in the local election. It didn't pain me to cast a vote for the city council candidates, and I didn't even have to get out of my car to put my ballot in the drop box.

6. I'm thankful for getting regular car maintenance tasks done (or at least scheduled). One oil change was done today. One is scheduled for Monday.

Even during weeks filled with rather mundane tasks, there is still room for fun, though:

7. I'm thankful for phone calls from my children. I love hearing how their days are going.

8. I'm thankful for birthdays, and half-birthdays. This week, I attended a tea party for a 6-month-old. Her unbirthday happened to fall on my oldest son's half-birthday, and my granddaughter's 1st birthday, so although I was away from my son and granddaughter, I could at least celebrate their days, too! (And the 6-month-old was truly adorable, and I enjoyed visiting with the women at the party.)

9. I'm thankful for my mom's upcoming birthday. I am so lucky to have her as a mom!

10. I'm thankful for John. Tonight we are going axe-throwing! Never a dull moment! (Haha.) John just piped up, "My wife with her sharp wit!" Can you tell we have fun together?

  2. Why do i have the feeling that the "tea" for a 6-month-old was less for the baby and more for the mom who needed a reason to socialize a bit? And i wonder why i didn't think of that when mine were young.

Hope your avocado plant continues to thrive, and that you have fun with the ax throwing.

    1. The baby had been given a super frilly outfit and needed an occasion so she could wear it, so the mom came up with the tea party idea. (And yes, it was definitely more for the adults' socialization needs!)

The ax throwing was tons of fun!

  4. Whew! So glad the link was still open, and glad I have internet service again.
You and John are spot on with those axes! Wow. You can protect me anytime.
I hope there will still be one fresh apricot on the tree for me.😀

Ten Things of Thankful: 39 Years Edition

A political map of the world circa 1987. The Soviet Union takes up a sizable portion. A lot has happened in the last 39 years. The Berlin Wall came down. The Soviet Union collapsed. The Twin Towers fell. Technology has changed: landlines and phone booths are practically extinct, and random questions can be answered in seconds by asking Google, Siri, or Alexa. No longer do drivers keep the Thomas Guide in their cars; navigation systems will give turn-by-turn directions, and recalculate when the driver doesn't follow the directions. Some cars don't even need drivers. While many shoppers do their shopping in-person, some simply log into Amazon and have their item show up on their doorstep--sometimes within hours.  I've seen pieces of the Berlin Wall. I've traveled to places that used to be behind the Iron Curtain. I've been to Ground Zero. I no longer have a house phone, and have looked up the answers to countless questions using my cell phone. I do not miss the stress...

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. I'm thankful for anticipated berries.  We continue to clear out and otherwise prepare John's parents' house for sale. I've been going through old photos and...

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...
