Thursday Thoughts: My "How Blogging Has Changed Me" Top 10 List

John made a comment the other day, telling me one way that blogging has changed me.  Of course, his statement inspired a blog post--because bloggers are like that, aren't we?

You will probably never see this on the Late Show with David Letterman, but here's my Top 10 List:

10.  I take a LOT more photos.

9.   I've joined Twitter (@thankful_me).   Blogging is a gateway to other social media platforms.  Twitter hasn't hooked me in like blogging has, though.  (I'm blaming my non-smart phone, which I really don't feel the need to update.)

8.  I find myself accomplishing tasks so that I have something to post on the blog.

7.  I've vicariously lived through the polar vortex.  Maybe living in the desert isn't so bad.

6.  My world instantly shrank, as I gained friends from all over the world.

5.   I google word usage questions much more often.  (Shrank/shrunk being an example.)

4.  I name-drop often enough that my family knows my blogging friends by their first names.  (And if your post made me laugh, you can be sure that I shared it with my family.)

3.  I'm more adventurous.  (This according to John.)  The other day, when he asked if a particular plate was oven-proof, I told him that I thought so, but if not, I could always take some photos and make the disaster a blog post--like I did with the exploding cake pan.

2.  I rely more on my faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ.  I've read heartfelt posts about numerous trials of life--mental and physical health problems, parenting challenges, economic woes--and I don't have the power to change anything.  A friend stopped blogging, and I wonder if the cancer took her.  I pray for those in need as I become aware of situations, and I cling to my belief that through Christ's atonement, everything will be made right in the end.  An eternal perspective is the only lens through which this life makes sense.

1.  I'm more thankful.  When I titled my blog, "Thankful Me," I labeled myself.  The blog became my own daily affirmation.  Co-hosting Lizzi's blog hop, 10 Things of Thankful, only deepened my resolve to be thankful.  Hmm, maybe I should start a fitness blog!

How has blogging changed you?

  1. Blogging has helped me stay sane here in Tiny Town, Iowa. I don't feel so isolated because I think of my readers and other bloggers as my friends (almost sisters), and love reading their posts and comments on my posts.

    2. I love this post Kristi because I love your blog...the blogging world has opened up a very new world for me meeting such wonderful people is the bonus part having said all of that I love my own blogs too and l am modestly proud of each finished product....late last year I lost all my pictures on all my posts (blame it on the stress of the holidays) so one by one I am reloading the pictures back to all my posts ... I am not beating myself because what is done is done and the silver lining is i am organizing my pictures for each posts, and all of my pics now have water marks on it. I hope to get done soon so I can start posting again but for now this is okay, I am still learning the how to's of the world of blogging which makes me feel good about my work...just a few months ago I added a print-friendly recipe link to all my posts (so proud ) I challenged myself to do that and taught myself how! Each blog I come across has inspired me to do better and to use this platform for good!
Great effort and beautiful work my friend!
      Smile your a Blogger!!!

      XOXO

  5. Here too, I commented on this post as the first person yesterday... Don't see it... Lost in the mail???
Just said; Never realized how someone could change through blogging, but I do recognize a lot in your post. I feel enriched by all the great people - mostly women - I met due to blogging. Henk knows all the first names of all my blog-palls too. Just following the lifes of people all over the world is so interesting and teaching perspective too.
Thanks for sharing and thank John for noticing! Have a good weekend!!

  6. Interesting post -- I love it when you make me really think. How has blogging changed me -- and I do think it has. It has challenged me into improve my geeky skills and to spend more time learning Photoshop. But the really best part is that it has introduced me to some wonderful people (most of them Grandmothers) who I would have never met -- and probably never will other than in the virtual world. But I am very thankful for each of them. -- including you!

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...

Ten Things of Thankful: Live from Oregon, part 2

stock photo of old computer monitor When I was 10 or 11, I remember sitting next to my dad in our living room and reading computer code to him as he entered it into an Apple computer. We would finish the exercise and he would hit enter (or was it "run"?) and wait expectantly for the green type to appear on the screen. If we were lucky, the whole conversation would occur. Most often, there would be an error either in my dictation of the code, or in the typing of the code. We would then go painstakingly back through the lines, character by character, to find and correct the error. After what seemed like hours (and might have been), we would succeed and the computer would finally run the entire program. It was magical! My dad designed and built an earth-sheltered, passive solar home decades before solar panels were commonplace. He also was on a 9-month waiting list for a Prius, when hybrids were not seen on every street.  While my dad is definitely on the cutting edge of technol...

Ten Things of Thankful: Oregon Edition, Part 3

A western bluebird, sitting at the base of a house window, looks inside Thanks (1) to those who have sent well-wishes for my mom's recovery. Her wrist is healing up nicely. I met a friend from high school for lunch this past week. It was so nice to have a chance to visit with her for a couple of hours. She is one of those friends who it doesn't matter how much time has passed, we can pick right back up into meaningful conversations. Lunch ended all too soon, but I'm so thankful (2) for her, and I'm thankful (3) that she reminded me of the importance of reaching out to others.  Being in my parents' home this week, visiting with a long-time (I'm not saying old!) friend, and with Mother's Day tomorrow, my mind naturally reflects upon the women in my life. I'm thankful (4) for an incredible mom--a gentle woman who taught and loved and guided us (and still does.) I'm thankful (5) for grandmas who were different in their personalities but united in their...
