Ten Things of Thankful: Even With Computer Problems

Argh!  I had a post all ready to publish, and somehow, it completely disappeared.  Well, that just gives me another chance to look back over my week and review again the things for which I am thankful.  Breathe, Kristi, breathe.  Focus on the thankful!

1.  I'm thankful that we were able to attend church with our granddaughters on Sunday, and John blessed our newest edition.

2.  I'm thankful that I got to be at Disneyland for the final day of performances there by Billy Hill and the Hillbillies.  I don't think I've ever been part of such a unified-in-their-support audience.  It was really a lot of fun, in a bittersweet sort of way.

3.  I'm thankful for those who offer encouragement.  I am signed up to run a 10K next week, and I am much less prepared for this run than I should be.  I came down with a whopper of a cold after Thanksgiving, and didn't run for weeks.  I ran 5 K on Dec. 30th and was feeling more confident.  Now I'm fighting another cold.  My first run this week was only 2 miles long, and I was not too happy about that.  John reminded me that even though it wasn't as far as I wanted to go, I still ran 2 milesLizzi told me that if I increased my distance only 1/2 mile each day, I would work up to the full 10K by race day.  I'm still worried about this cold (I do like to breathe while running, or while doing anything, for that matter), but I have increased my distance slowly and am feeling a bit more hopeful now.

4.  I'm thankful for beautiful clouds, and for John for taking a photo when I didn't have my camera on hand.

As is par for the course, the clouds were more impressive in person.
5.  I'm thankful for date nights with John.

6.  I'm thankful that it doesn't matter where we go, or what we do, we still enjoy each other's company.  Yes, our date started at Lowe's, where we purchased needed door hardware and then wandered through the store, commenting on merchandise ranging from orchids to vacuum cleaners.

7.  I'm thankful for little moments that make me smile.  I was driving, so I don't have a photo, but picture if you will, three gigantic St. Bernard dogs walking down the sideway.  Their owners were in tow--not literally, but nearly.  The sight of those huge dogs made me smile.

8.  I'm thankful for shows that make me laugh.  Studio C is one of our favorite things to watch now.  It's on BYU-TV, or full episodes are also online here.  The show features Captain Literally, Shoulder Angel, and sketches like this one:

 9.  I'm thankful for the chance I had this week to spend time with a few friends, serving lunch to about 75 missionaries.  We settled into a bit of an assembly line, as we put together pulled pork sandwiches.  One of my friends kept suggesting jokingly that we start our own restaurant, because we were having so much fun.  The missionaries appreciated the food, too.

10.  I'm thankful for a rather good memory, which allowed me to remember 9 out of the 10 things I had originally written for this post.  90% is still an "A," right?

  3. love the line about "(I do like to breathe while running, or while doing anything, for that matter),"
a reminder of the seeming inevitability of lost Comments and Posts…. in theory, you experience will help me feel less bad when it happens to me (I actually believe that, there is a certain magic to 'identifying with another person').

    3 St Bernards, huh? lol

    1. Despite Christine`s warning, I might have to go the Nyquil route tonight. That is how pro-breathing I am.

I think that one of the reasons we experience troubles in life is so we can identify more easily with others.

Yes, 3 St. Bernard. Quite the sight!

  4. I am IMPRESSED by the memory there! And the running. I know it's hard, but you've done 10k before, and I KNOW you can do it again. On the day, you'll get a load of 'race buzz' and that will help you along.

I've never seen Studio C before. Thanks for the clip - it was pretty good!

I'm glad you and John had such a nice date together :D

    1. I'm counting on a whole lot of race buzz this time, and hoping to shake off this cold before Saturday. Thanks again for the encouragement!

Studio C keeps us laughing, and our teenager enjoys it as much as we do, which is a bonus.

      Date nights are always fun!

  5. What a great list! 90% is an A in public school so let's count it!
We had date nights at Home Depot, and Target, and grocery stores.....time together counts wherever you are. So glad you can enjoy eachothers company!
That skit was hysterical! I feel like couples should watch that together to try to avoid those types of arguments! And have a good laugh at humans, they're very entertaining!
    Beautiful sweet baby, congratulations!

    1. I agree with you--that sketch showed how ridiculous those arguments are.

We don't limit ourselves to Lowe's, either! Time together certainly counts, no matter where you are.

  6. Loved the video and this list of thankfuls. Good luck on your 10k.

  7. You're going to rock that 10k. I'm so impressed you even signed up!

    1. Thanks for your confidence! I haven't ever done a non-Disney 10K. I know that at Disneyland I will be distracted by everything to look at, so hopefully my body won't realize I'm running! :-)

  8. At our schools, a 90% is a B, but I think it's ridiculous, so I'm still giving you an A. :)
You had such a good week, up until the computer ate your post. Oh, and except for the cold. Whatever you do, DO NOT take Nyquil. You won't be able to run for days.
I always found that when I had a cold, running always helped clear my nose out. Sure, it's completely gross having a snotty nose when you run, but I could breathe. Not so for you?
(I'm with Clark. That line about liking to breathe was funny.)
The clip was hilarious! That had to be hard for those actors to do, and they did it well.
Hope your cold clears up and you are able to run how you want. I'm guessing the excitement of the race itself will get you through.

    1. Thanks for bumping up my grade.

I'm still debating the Nyquil thing, It was my friend in December, but of course, I didn't run much at all in December. If I take Nyquil, John might be able to sleep without me waking him up with my coughing. Yes, running clears the nose fairly well--right now it's more the hacking cough I'm worried about. However, I have almost a week to defeat this thing, and you're right, the excitement of a Disneyland race should give me a burst of energy.

Glad you enjoyed the Studio C clip. I've been impressed with the talent of the performers, and I really appreciate the fact that their sketches appeal to all ages.

  9. The pictures of John, you and your granddaughters are beautiful!

Wow...a 10K! Good for you! I am not a runner so can't even imagine running 2 miles. Eeep! You'll do great! Hope you will be able to breath because like you said...that is a good thing.

I have never watched much less heard of Studio C. That was absolutely HILARIOUS!!!! So witty! Thanks for turning me onto that one!!

    1. Thank you.

I'm not really a runner either, I just play one occasionally in real life. :-) I'm enjoying it, though, and maybe someday I'll believe that I am a real runner.

Glad you enjoyed Studio C. I had a hard time deciding on which clip to post; there are so many funny ones!

  10. I adore the baptism photo - so beautiful - so thank you for sharing.

As for 10K - oooh! That's my race. I sign up for 2-3 a year to keep fit. I think everyone to date has given some good advice. Only thing I'd add is to plan based on your level of fitness. If you know you need to take breaks, take them. Run ten; walk one. Or if that's too "easy" tell yourself you'll walk for one minute at water stations or half-way, or whatever. I find if I look at the course based on my level of fitness (and I've been doing 10Ks for about 5 years now, so my fitness has varied a bit in that time) I can plot a way to do it that works for where I am at the fitness stage I'm at - and I come out feeling like I've challenged myself - which is what I want. Best of luck!

Regarding date night - I laughed that it started at Lowes :) We reno-ed our bathrooms last year so I have a great visual ;)

    Best - Louise

  11. Sounds like a wonderful week except for the cold. I will keep my fingers crossed that you are feeling 100% come race day.

  12. 90% is definitely an A and if you need to walk the last bit of the race, you're still doing it, and doing it is what counts. I hope you recover from your cold soon and I just love the photos of your youngest family members!!

  13. Oh, those adorable granddaughters! How much fun they must be for you!
The only time I would run would be because something was chasing me, and quite honestly, I think I'd be more inclined just to lie down and curl up in the fetal position. But you go!
We have had date nights before where we just wandered around Walmart.
One of our neighbors has an English Sheepdog pup. It's been so much fun watching him grow up! He gallumphs around the yard with his (now) adolescent long legs and all that floppy hair. Big dogs are so funny!

  14. Yeah, 90 is definitely Those babies are so sweet!

I love your date nights - it's a great relationship that can see a trip to the hardware store as a date. Fab Hub and I went to Wawa this afternoon. How's that for a hot date?

  15. 90% is a solid B in South Carolina but it's an A everywhere else! I loved your list - hope you were able to breathe for your race. Think about funny Studio C episodes while you run. "THAT'S WHAT I THINK TOO!!" we say it all the time.

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
