"Are you ready for Christmas?"
"No, I still need to finish the shopping, and I haven't even begun to bake yet." (sigh)
Chances are, you've asked or been asked the "Are you ready" question at least once (a day!) this month. The assumption is that Christmas requires a huge to-do list. December runs on making, and checking, lists. However, like the arrival of a baby (and isn't this what Christmas is all about, anyway?), Christmas comes regardless of whether we think we are ready.
As the Grinch learned, it's not the presents nor the food that define Christmas. Christmas, by definition, requires Christ. I love this video. Can you imagine the thoughts and feelings of Mary, Joseph, the innkeepers, the shepherds--all those who were in close proximity that night so long ago?
When I think of Jesus Christ and His mission, I think of someone who had the weight of the world on his shoulders, yet could give full and complete attention to each individual. He embodies peace and love, and I can't imagine him frantically trying to check off a to-do list.
At this busy time of year, I need to take the time to pause, breathe, and focus on the purpose of this holiday. Christmas is not a deadline for accomplishments, but a reminder of how we should be living our lives. I should be celebrating by emulating the inner peace that Jesus Christ shows. I need to take time to enjoy the moments. Why am I doing what I am doing? Psalms 46:10 seems especially appropriate in December: "Be still, and know that I am God."
When I can reflect peaceful joy, (and maybe even learn to throw away my to-do list), I'll know I'm ready for Christmas.
May we all be ready for Christmas!

ReplyDeleteAmen! I guess in the US the 'christmas way' is a bit different than in Europe, but it's turning that way a bit more every year; all about presents and big parties. I was brought up with Christmas meaning time for reflection and family. No presents, no big diners or parties. Just being together. And that's still the way we celebrate christmas and happy to do so.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more - that question absolutely drives me batty! Too much anymore the focus is all wrong. I found the same thing true years ago when we got married - people would ask about the wedding plans and all they wanted to hear about was party details. Guess we drove them all a little crazy when we were very low-key and focused on the ceremony instead.
