Friday Family History: Birthday Celebrations

OK, so it's 40 plus 6, but who's counting?

My birthday comes next week, and I thought it would be nice to document some of the memories I've had of birthdays past, both mine and others.

Growing up, one of my most memorable birthday parties was the year my guests brought, in lieu of presents, coins to donate to a family whose baby had numerous medical problems.   I'm sure my mom must have suggested the idea to me, but she didn't force it on me.  She helped me learn the joy of giving.

My husband and I will forever remember our oldest child's third birthday.  For the week preceding the birthday, we had read the children's book, Now I Am Three, to our son.  The book lists all the fun things a three-year-old child is able to do.  The big day came, and our son smiled constantly, happy to blow out candles and open presents.  That night, after a story and prayers, as I was putting him to bed, he asked me, "When do I get black hair and turn brown?"  I suddenly realized that Now I Am Three gave our son unintended expectations about his third birthday.  He seemed rather disappointed when I explained to him that his skin and hair color would remain the same.  He had been waiting patiently all day to change his race!

Can you see the anticipation on his face?  Big things happen once you're three!

A few years ago, my mom gave my grandma a wonderful 90th birthday party.  Mom and her brother both wrote down memories they had of Grandma, and shared them at the party.  Grandma appreciated hearing the thoughts, and the rest of us did, too.

What are some of your birthday memories?  Do you have family birthday traditions?

Thanks for all those who make birthdays memorable.

  3. Such a cute story about your son! He's pretty cute, too:)
In our house, the birthday child decides what I make for breakfast and where we will go for dinner,(We don't eat out much, so this is a huge deal.)and he doesn't have to do his chores that day.

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
