What a Wonderful World (An #AtoZChallenge Post): S is for Spring Training

The view of the baseball field at Hammond Stadium from the stand behind home plate

My husband recently re-retired, and we are front-loading travel. My #AtoZChallenge posts this year will explore our adventures—some pre-retirement, some post. Today’s location: Spring Training.

I recognize that “Spring Training” isn’t actually technically a location, but my husband assures me it means one of two places, so it counts. 😊In our case, we went to Fort Myers, Florida, to watch a game between the Minnesota Twins and the Baltimore Orioles.

Baseball is America’s pastime, and has significance to my family, too. I grew up hearing how my great-grandpa played for a professional ball team, how my grandpa and his brothers were invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals during spring training and (although neither my grandpa nor his brothers made the team), my grandpa was catcher during the try-outs when both Paul and Dizzy Dean were hitting.  I recently came across a photo of my grandpa and his brothers in their baseball uniforms.

So, baseball isn’t just fun and games and a patriotic pastime, but also a way to connect to my family history. My husband has rooted for the Twins since he was a teen, so when we realized that we were going to be in Florida at the same time as spring training, we knew we needed to get tickets to the game.

The stadium was clean and comfortable, the weather was perfect, and the Twins took an early lead. One of their star players, Carlos Correa, used to play A ball in Lancaster, California during the years that we regularly watched the JetHawks play, so it was fun to see his progress. Also, another player, Trevor Larnach, played for the Oregon State Beavers (my dad’s college team), and he hit a two-run home run that I somehow managed to get a photo of at just the right time.

Although the Twins were up by five, they ended up losing when the Baltimore Orioles scored 8 runs in the top of the ninth inning. Final score: 13 to 10. Even though it’s a shame they didn’t win, it was an enjoyable afternoon. I’m glad we were able to “root, root, root for the home team” and I would gladly attend another spring training game in the future.

Come back tomorrow to see where in the world we’ll visit next!

  1. Since Spring Training is almost never in the same place as your team's home base, I'd count it as a destination, too. It was an exciting game as well, I'm sorry your team didn't win.

    1. The loss was OK. It was nice to see how the coaches gave new guys a chance to play. Some of the men didn't even have their name on their jersey, yet were given a chance to try out.

Ten Things of Thankful: 39 Years Edition

A political map of the world circa 1987. The Soviet Union takes up a sizable portion. A lot has happened in the last 39 years. The Berlin Wall came down. The Soviet Union collapsed. The Twin Towers fell. Technology has changed: landlines and phone booths are practically extinct, and random questions can be answered in seconds by asking Google, Siri, or Alexa. No longer do drivers keep the Thomas Guide in their cars; navigation systems will give turn-by-turn directions, and recalculate when the driver doesn't follow the directions. Some cars don't even need drivers. While many shoppers do their shopping in-person, some simply log into Amazon and have their item show up on their doorstep--sometimes within hours.  I've seen pieces of the Berlin Wall. I've traveled to places that used to be behind the Iron Curtain. I've been to Ground Zero. I no longer have a house phone, and have looked up the answers to countless questions using my cell phone. I do not miss the stress...

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. I'm thankful for anticipated berries.  We continue to clear out and otherwise prepare John's parents' house for sale. I've been going through old photos and...

Tuesday Time to Tackle: DIY Swamp Cooler Pump Replacement

Yesterday morning, despite having the swamp cooler on all night long, we woke up to 81 degree temperatures inside the house.  John went outside to inspect and announced that the swamp cooler pump had stopped working. Fortunately, replacing the pump is a quick and simple do-it-yourself project.
