Ten Things of Thankful: I'm Not Surprised, Punxsutawney Phil

We've had a bit of a reprieve from the constant snow drizzle, and roads are clear (except up near Salt Lake City where though they may be clear from snow, nearly everyday a huge herd of elk shuts down the freeway) Nevertheless, I'm not surprised by the Groundhog Day news this year; six more weeks of winter sounds about right. I just keep telling myself how nice it is that the drought is being chipped away. 

1. I am thankful for snow. (More is in the forecast, of course.) 

2. I am thankful that the plants will benefit from so much moisture. 

3. I am thankful for the knowledge that spring will come eventually and I will be able to start seeds and plant trees and bushes. 

4. I am thankful for a warm dry house.

5. I am thankful for reliable transportation. Knocking on wood with this one; our newest car is 13 years old this year.

6. I am thankful to be old enough to think that of course cars in the 13-20+ year range can be described as new. I mean, they were at least made in this millennium, right?

7. I am thankful for the beautiful moon. The photo of that round white blob doesn't do it justice, but use your imagination. 

8. I am thankful for cousins with initiative. The family reunion that started when my great-great grandpa's children would gather for a yearly picnic-- the reunion that was last held in 2007, if memory serves--is on the calendar again for 2023! It will be good to reconnect and hopefully share stories and photos of those gone before.

9. I am thankful for newspapers.com and genealogybank.com. Articles found on those sites are so helpful in learning more about family history. And on the subject of family history, RootsTech is next month! If you can't attend in person, you can attend virtually at no cost. 

10. I am thankful for John: fixer of temperamental washing machines, frequent victor of board games, and my best friend.

    A family reunion sounds fabulous, i hope everyone gets to go and have a wonderful time.

    Spring does come again, no matter how long or snowy the winter.

    Grateful the western US is getting all this snow and rain that will hopefully help with the terrible deficit of recent years. Your moon photo is so pretty! I got a new phone and hope I can take a moon photo with it, because the old one only gave me a little poof of white instead of a moon! Our newest car is 12, the other is 13, and the one Emma is driving is 19. Need them to keep on keeping on as long as possible!

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

  A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. Tuesday Time to Tackle: DIY Swamp Cooler Pump Replacement

Yesterday morning, despite having the swamp cooler on all night long, we woke up to 81 degree temperatures inside the house.  John went outside to inspect and announced that the swamp cooler pump had stopped working. Fortunately, replacing the pump is a quick and simple do-it-yourself project.
