Ten Things of Thankful: Back on my Feet Edition

In my last Ten Things of Thankful post, I reported that I ran a half-marathon and that my leg was paying for it, but that I hoped I'd be back to normal soon. I published that post on Saturday. During the middle of that night, I tried to get out of bed and realized that I greatly underestimated the extent of my injury. Thankfully, I am doing much better after a week of lots of rest.

1. I'm thankful for crutches, which have allowed me to get around. I've never had need for crutches before, and didn't realize just how useful they are. (As thankful as I am for them, I'm also thankful that I went the entire day today without using them!)

2. Although normally I am thankful that many stores here are actually closed on Sundays, I am also thankful that a Walmart was open. I'm also thankful that although the closest store didn't have any crutches in stock, John didn't have to drive too far to find one that did.

3. I'm thankful that Drexel is such a good dog. When I would take him outside, he walked very slowly down the stairs. He recognized that I wasn't up to bounding down quickly.

4. I'm thankful for shopping carts that are in the cart return area. As the week progressed, I tried grocery shopping. I parked by the cart return, left the crutches in the car, and grabbed a cart for support. I felt like a little old lady, but it worked! (Do I need help out? No, thank you! If you grab that cart away from me we are in real trouble!)

5. I'm thankful for the internet. I spent hours on Pinterest this week (something I don't normally do), and gathered ideas on what to do with our backyard. We'd like to get a fence in before winter. (Sorry, Drexel, but just because you need to go out in the snow doesn't mean we need to every time.) Before the fence goes up, though, we should figure out just what to do with the slopes. Seeing examples of what other people have done with their sloped backyards helped me visualize what might be possible in ours.

6. I'm thankful for upcoming trips. It's always fun to plan for the future.

7. I'm thankful for emergency responders. As a nation, we collectively remembered the tragedy of 9/11 this week. Then we watched as Hurricane Florence lumbered onto shore. Closer to home for me, Utah Valley is filled with smoke from fires. All over the world, men and women serve selflessly to help us all.

8. I'm thankful for phone calls from my children. I love hearing from them.

9. I'm thankful for particularly good news in a phone call this week: our oldest daughter passed the bar exam!

10. I'm thankful for John. He has gone above and beyond this week. I thought I would be the one trying to make his life easier, as his legs recuperated from running a marathon; instead, he was the one waiting on me.

How was your week? What are you thankful for?

  1. Sorry to hear your leg has been bothering you so much. I hope rest will help it heal. Crutches are a blessing, but hard on the arm pits. Congratulations to your daughter!

    1. It's getting better day by day, and is much better than a week ago, so I'm sure I'll be all better soon.
I hope that you are getting settled into your new place and that is starting to feel like home.

  2. Crutches?! Holy smokes Kristi. Do take it easy. Legs and in particular, knees, are tough body parts to heal.
Congratulations to your daughter!! She must be so relieved :D
Drexel is going to love a fenced yard. But I'm sure he'll still be bugging you to go out too lol

    1. Fortunately, my knees are fine, but I am taking your advice and taking it easy. I'm not going to run until I'm all healed up.
Yes, my daughter is very relieved that she doesn't have to take the bar exam again.
Until we get a doggy door, Drexel will rely on us to let him outside. He mainly likes to hang out with his people, though.

  3. Your #4 comment made me laugh. You are strong, very, very, strong, and no one could yank that cart away from you! They wouldn't dare.

Yeah for #6! It will be fun!

  4. I trust your 'crutch time' will be short. They are a life-saver but really have a surprisingly steep initial learning curve. (Had to use them only once, but the counter-intuitive approach to going down stairs on crutches sticks in my memory.)

    1. I haven't used them for the past couple of days, though I'm still resting my leg a lot. I know what you mean about the stairs--there are lots of stairs in this house, so I had to figure that one out quickly!

Ten Things of Thankful: 39 Years Edition

A political map of the world circa 1987. The Soviet Union takes up a sizable portion. A lot has happened in the last 39 years. The Berlin Wall came down. The Soviet Union collapsed. The Twin Towers fell. Technology has changed: landlines and phone booths are practically extinct, and random questions can be answered in seconds by asking Google, Siri, or Alexa. No longer do drivers keep the Thomas Guide in their cars; navigation systems will give turn-by-turn directions, and recalculate when the driver doesn't follow the directions. Some cars don't even need drivers. While many shoppers do their shopping in-person, some simply log into Amazon and have their item show up on their doorstep--sometimes within hours.  I've seen pieces of the Berlin Wall. I've traveled to places that used to be behind the Iron Curtain. I've been to Ground Zero. I no longer have a house phone, and have looked up the answers to countless questions using my cell phone. I do not miss the stress...

Ten Things of Thankful: April Showers Edition

A red peony bud prepares to open fully  After an incredibly dry winter, we had a bit of precipitation this past week, in the form of falling snow. We didn't have much, and it didn't really stick, but we'll take water however it wants to come. Fortunately, my peonies seem unaffected by the cold snap, and are ready to put on a show here soon. 1. I'm thankful for moisture. 2. I'm thankful the flowers are still going to bloom. I don't know how the colder temperatures will affect the fruit crops. The strawberries look like they are still planning to set fruit. We'll have to see what happens with the peach, apricot, pear, and apple. (The apricot only bears heavily every other year anyway, and I think this is an "off" year--though I could be wrong.) Strawberry plants in full bloom 3. I'm thankful for anticipated berries.  We continue to clear out and otherwise prepare John's parents' house for sale. I've been going through old photos and...

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...
