Ten Thing of Thankful: April General Conference Edition

Last weekend, I didn't go to a church building on Sunday--rather, I watched General Conference from the comfort of my own couch. Twice a year, on the first weekend of April and October, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participate in a world-wide conference. We listen as the prophet, apostles, and other leaders speak to us.  I always come away from conference renewed, refreshed, and encouraged.  Today, for my Ten Things of Thankful post, I will share some of the quotes I heard. (For my friends who depend upon photo descriptions, each of the photos simply are memes of the quotes listed.)  Full transcripts and videos of all the talks can be found here:  General Conference

I'm thankful for these words:

1. "No true teaching or learning will ever occur when done in frustration or anger, and hearts will not change where love is not present." (S. Mark Palmer)

2. ". . . for enduring faith and to have the constant companionship of the Spirit, there is no substitute for the individual religious observance that is comparable to physical and mental development." (Quentin L. Cook)

 3. "Fear rarely has the power to change our hearts. . . ." (Dieter F. Uchtdorf)

4.  ". . .if you listen to the first prompting you will get it right nine times out of ten." (Ronald A. Rasband)

5. ". . . it is by divine design that not all the voices in God's choir are the same." (Jeffrey R. Holland)

6.  "Over time, simple habits of belief lead to miraculous results." (L. Whitney Clayton)

7.  "A succession of small, consistently kept promises leads to integrity." (Joy D. Jones)

8.  "Don't look around, look up!" (Yoon Hwan Choi)

9.  "Overcoming the world means turning ourselves outward." (Neil L. Andersen)

10. "We are children of God. Receiving light, continuing in God, and receiving more light is what we are created to do." (Mark A. Bragg)

11. ". . . a repenting sinner draws closer to God than does the self-righteous person who condemns that sinner." (Dale G. Renlund)

12. ". . . even the best technology can never be a substitute for revelation from heaven." (Henry B. Eyring)

(When I have a question, I should be quicker to turn to God than Google!)

And as always, I am thankful for John. Our 30th wedding anniversary is just weeks away. I love the adventures we have had together, and the adventures that are in our future.

What are you thankful for this week? What conference quotes stood out to you? As always, feel free to leave a comment, or link up your post at the Ten Things of Thankful blog!

  1. I liked #6 The notion that faith must be a bolt of lightning experience is un-fair to the 99.999% of the population who do have it bestowed by a single event. Almost by definition (imo) faith is acquired by the choice to believe, the 'reasonableness' of our belief being irrelevant, rather it is the willingness to invest of ourselves in something that does have have proof or objective support. It all begins with the willingness to believe beyond reason.

    1. I like #6, too. Your views on faith remind me of a verse in the Book of Mormon that says: "But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words." (Alma 32:27) Faith is not the same as knowledge, and does require a willingness to believe. And, as we exercise faith through small, simple, consistent actions (prayer, study, etc.), we eventually find that our faith has become strong.

  2. Happy upcoming anniversary. My favorite is #8, remembering always, that no matter what is going on around you, God is "up" there. I like the meme idea, as well.

Fear is a hard thing to push back against, but we must.

  6. I apologize for being such a late visitor to your TToT post! We are back from vacation now, and I am slowly getting back in gear and caught up!

This was such a wonderful collection of lessons, and I loved the meme's you shared with them! I went back to try to decide which ones I liked best, and I found myself saying "and this one, and this one" all the way down the list! Profound truths so simply stated!

I think being able to share in hearing a conference world-wide is one of the truly positive uses of technology, and a real blessing for those who find it difficult to get out and attend a meeting somewhere. It is obvious that much was gained from it.

I would choose 1,4,5, and 6 as my favorites, while #7 reminded me of my husband whose picture is probably next to integrity in the dictionary. It is the way he conducts his life, without question, and I admire that so much!

"Turning to God rather than Google" is a timely thought. Technology is not a substitute for faith, we need to know when to shut it down.

Congrats on your upcoming 30th Anniversary, you provide a wonderful example to us on how to make love last and marriage work!

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
