Ten Things of Thankful: Not Waiting Till the Last Minute This Week

Yes, I'm going to post my TToT on Saturday rather than Sunday this week! Slowly (but hopefully surely), I am getting more organized.  I'm thankful:

1.  We had more rain this week.  It's sunny again now, but it's so nice that we have been getting so much moisture.  Some of the precipitation was even in the form of . . .

2.  Snow.  It only fell for a short time on Tuesday morning here on the valley floor, and it was too wet to stick, but it was fun to watch the big flakes coming down.  It stuck in the mountains, though.

3.  I'm thankful for Craigslist.  I was able to find front seats for John's Ford Anglia this week, which then necessitated a . . .

4.  Road trip to San Diego.  San Diego is the land of perfect weather.  Yes, I like rain, and yes, I like occasional snow, but San Diego just makes me happy with its sunshine and shirt-sleeve weather.  Youngest daughter and I visited a butterfly farm and ate Mexican food in Old Town.

On the way back home, we stopped at . . .

5. Disneyland to watch the Main Street Electrical Parade, which instantly transported me back to my childhood and my first trip to Disneyland.

The week wasn't all just fun and games, of course.  In fact, it was pretty service-oriented.  The saying, "When it rains, it pours" applied this week as far as needs in the church, and I am so thankful for . . .

6.  The many, many people who step up to help when there is a need. I appreciated those who alerted me of needs, those who took in dinners, visited at hospitals, and those who checked up on others.

7.  I am also thankful for the good feeling that comes through service.  Service is truly a win-win situation: needs get met, and both the giver and the receiver feel better.

8.  I'm thankful for friends.  Whether having lunch, going for frozen yogurt, attending a baby shower, holding a church meeting, or just talking, I enjoy spending time with friends.

9.  I'm thankful for civilized discussion.  I wrote a post about my thoughts about the women's march.  I knew that not everyone would agree.  I am (as always) impressed that 100% agreement on issues is not required for civility or friendship.

10.  I'm thankful for John.  This week, we saw the movie, Lion. Thirty years ago, we attended the Sundance Film Festival together. Every year since then, we try to watch a movie at the end of January that would be a good film festival candidate.  Lion fit the bill nicely, and we felt a real connection to it.  I'm so thankful for the life and family that John and I have made--through birth, and through adoption.

How did your week go?  What things are you thankful for?

  1. You did have a busy but good week! We had snow one afternoon too, which doesn't happen often here, and it was pretty. I agree with you about #7, everyone is blessed by service! I agree with #9 too, we can learn to listen to each other and exchange ideas respectfully without fully agreeing on everything. That doesn't need to be a reason to end friendships. I've heard that movie is excellent, we will have to put it on our want to see list!

  2. Wow! It sounds like you had a very busy week. I'm glad that there were a lot of helping hands. John must be really excited about your purchase! You remember so much more about that first trip to Disneyland. What stood out for me was Small World.

    1. It's so nice when friends get together after some time apart and still are able to pick up the conversation as if no time had passed.

  4. Like you number 5 will always take me back to my childhood and to my first trip to Disneyland with my Uncle. I am glad the Electrical Parade is back, wish he was here to go with me.

Conversations are so much nicer when more than one person does the talking. :-) Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts; I'd love to hear from you!

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
