Ten Things of Thankful: And They Ran and Ran and Ran Edition

John and I met a goal today:  we finished our first half-marathon!

Photo:  John and I, holding a sign with our time (2:34)

I'm thankful:

1.  That we finished!
2.  That we made good time.  (Nevermind that the entire run, with very few minor exceptions, was downhill, and nevermind that we had some full-marathon runners finish ahead of us. It was a good time for us.)
3.  That the weather was absolutely wonderful for running.
4.  That the canyon provided a beautiful course.  Some of the leaves are starting to change color, and we even saw a moose!
5.  That we were provided gloves, a hat, and a blanket so we could stay warm before the start.
6.  That we were offered pancakes and pizza (Yes, please; and no, thank you) in addition to the par-for-the-course banana after the run.
7.  For all the volunteers who make the run possible.
8.  For all the spectators who cheer on the runners.  (It makes a difference!)
9.  For very specific spectators who show up to cheer on family members.  (Thanks!  Loved the banner and the cowbell!)
10.  For John, who is a wonderful running partner, and never makes me feel bad for setting a slower pace.

What's the most recent "first-time" thing you have done?

  5. So very proud of you, Kristi, you must be beaming. Once a friend and I walked a 15K. It was a good adrenaline high when we finished.

    1. One woman wore a shirt that said, "13.1 It seemed like a good idea at the time." It is kind of strange to think that we voluntarily decided to run that far!

    1. Not anytime soon! :-) Perhaps at a much lighter weight and with a lot more training, but I'm really quite satisfied with halves being my longest distance races.

  10. You are wonder woman! Congratulations! Downhill is a challenge, too, because it's easier to fall down when you're running down a hill or maybe that's just me.
    MORE COWBELL!
I would have taken the pizza....

  11. You're a star. Running like that is a major accomplishment. And that you could do it together with your spouse. You ran and you ran and you ran and you were rewarded with pancakes and pizza.
    :-)
    Not too shabby.
Also, the banner and the cowbell must have made all the difference as well.
I admire you, anyone who makes this commitment to physical fitness, exercise, and you keep it going. Lovely that the two of you could complete this as a team.

  12. Sounds like you had a wonderful week and a wonderful run! You mentioning pizza reminds me there are 2 cold pieces in the fridge and I may just have them for lunch! As for a first - for the first time ever I made bacon in the microwave. Who knew???

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
