Ten Things of Thankful: Barry White, Darth Vader, and Captain Hook

How's that for a title?  If this were Jeopardy, the correct question for the answer, "Barry White, Darth Vader, and Captain Hook" would be:  "Which individuals portrayed the progression of John's illness this week?"
Poor John.  After church last Sunday, I noticed his voice was a bit deeper than usual.  By the evening, I had to look every time he spoke to me, because I kept thinking Barry White was in the house. On Monday, just in time for May the 4th (Be With You), Barry had been replaced by Darth Vader's breathing.  Darth stuck around all week, but was interrupted by the appearance of Captain Hook, as John and I ran as Hook and Tinkerbell in a 10K at Disneyland.

At 5:15 this morning, pre-race.  I guess the reflective strips on my pants and belt work.

I fully expected to run alone, but Hook would not be persuaded.  I let him set the pace, and appreciated the companionship.  Hopefully John, as himself, will return soon.  In the meantime, here are this week's ten things of thankful:

1. I'm thankful that John is not following the "Sharing is Caring" philosophy, and I am feeling just fine so far.  That's kind of a terrible thankful, and I do hope he feels better soon, but I do hope to dodge the crud.

2.  I'm thankful for Pinterest coming to the rescue when we were invited to a get-together on May 4th.  Youngest daughter and I brought the Death Star, and left Darth Vader at home.  Without the ability to search for "Star Wars food" I don't know how I could have brought something so fitting.

3.  I'm thankful I was able to spend some one-on-one time with my oldest granddaughter.  We attended a toddler class, "The Nose Knows," at the zoo together, then explored more of the zoo on our own.  I love that she is at an age where everything is new, and the sight of a duck swimming in the moat commands her attention and delight more than a huge slumbering lion.  We petted a bunny, saw the elephants, watched chimpanzees eat carrots, and took selfies with the giraffes.

4.  I'm thankful for our Relief Society class on Tuesday night.  A woman in our ward (who is also a police officer) taught us some self-defense moves.  She brought mats, and gave each of us a chance to throw some punches.  You just never know what you will learn at church!

5.  I'm thankful that when I got home from Relief Society, youngest son was there!  He decided to come home for the summer, and we're glad to have him.

6.  I'm thankful that we were able to spend a laid-back day at Disneyland on Friday.  John and I had to pick up our running bibs before Saturday's run, so we drove down on Thursday night and spent the morning at the parks on Friday.

7.  I'm thankful that runDisney was sympathetic to my oldest daughter's plight.  She was supposed to run with us, but was involved in a 4-car pile-up on the freeway recently.  The impact compressed her spine, so her doctor advised her to not run.  (She's in physical therapy and hopefully will recover fully.) When John and I picked up our packet, I explained that my daughter would not be able to run with us, and asked if there was a way for my daughter to receive her shirt, etc.  Disney will be mailing her things out to her!  I know she is sad she had to miss the run, but I'm glad that she will at least get her shirt and commemorative pin.

8.  I'm thankful also that, even though oldest daughter was not there, I got to take a photo for her after listening to one of her favorite bloggers speak.  Leslie Kay of Disney Bound spoke at the running expo about creating Disney-inspired running outfits.  She is quite clever and also gracious.  She told me to tell my daughter hello and to get well soon.

Cute fashion blogger Leslie Kay, and me
9.  I'm thankful for moms in general, and my mom in particular.  Happy Mother's Day, Mom, and to all women with mother hearts (and child-status has nothing to do with that.)

10.  And to end as I began, I'm thankful for John.  I think he would walk 500 miles for me--or run 6.2!

Next week the Ten Things of Thankful blog hop celebrates 100 weeks!  Please, please, please consider writing a post and linking up next week.  We will be having prizes!  Go visit Lizzi's blog for more details.

  4. I was completely impressed with your Star Wars contribution when I saw it on FB, and I still am. Awesome.
John is a trooper! Most of us would have said a little thank you for the illness that prevented us from running 6 miles. :) You two look great!
What a special day you were able to have with your granddaughter. Oh I pray my kids stay close, so I can do the same with my grandkids someday.

  6. We are big runDisney fans. Though our races have been at Disney World. What a sport to continue on and complete the race even though he wasn't feeling up to his best. And that is one big bunny. What a cutie your granddaughter is.

    1. One of these years I'll have to try a Disney World run. I think their half-marathons are on Saturdays, right? Disneyland has theirs on Sundays, so I haven't tried a half yet. If they would move one to a Saturday, I think I'd like to try.

  8. loved the Barry White, Darth Vader…Capt Hook thing! There is a positive side to (nearly) everything, including having a cold (or whatever) cause we all get to be Barry White or Brenda Vacarro/Linda Ellerbee for a few days!

  9. John is quite a trouper! Poor guy! (I always sound like Brenda Vacarro when I have a cold.) Your costumes are great!
Love the Death Star - tasty and clever.
My son took zoo classes two summers when he was 5 or 6. He loved them. LA Zoo, or is there one nearer to you?

    1. The Exotic Feline Breeding Compound (http://www.cathouse-fcc.org/) is closer, but the class was at the LA Zoo. I will probably sign my granddaughter up for another class; I enjoyed spending the one-on-one time with her.

  12. Love men with deep husky voices... Barry White?! I would be all over him! Hope John gets to be his lovely self though, (Loved the way you shared his progress through his voice changes)
I even admire John more to run along while not feeling so great. Deep bough to you, sir.
Hope you had a wonderful (grand)mother's day. Sounds nice to have your boy home for the summer. Enjoy!

  13. I love the watermelon! Will have to share that one with Amara! Her Dad's birthday is coming and it is almost always a Star War theme! I thought of you Saturday when we watched the 5AM new - wondered if you were lining up to run. Glad John is recovering, too. (and Happy Mother's day!)

    1. The watermelon was easy to create by scraping off the green part of the rind with the end of a vegetable peeler. Amara could do it, no problem!

We were in our corral by 5:15; the race started at 5:30 a.m.

Happy Mother's Day to you, too!

  14. Well, I was certainly intrigued by your title and you did not disappoint. I like the way you wove it in, and I am SO IMPRESSED John ran at all! He should be called Superman instead!

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
