Monday Musing: Far Below Inadequate Can Be Enough

Do you ever observe needs that are too great for you to fill?  Are you ever overwhelmed by the problems of the world and feel helpless to solve them?

Recently, I was thinking about this incident from the New Testament:

I had always viewed it as a miracle, which it is, but hadn't really considered the point of view of the apostles.  They saw a need, and asked if perhaps the people should be sent away to feed themselves. Christ responded by asking the apostles to bring what they did have.  Of course, it was woefully inadequate--almost not even worth giving--but through His goodness, it was more than enough.

We might sometimes observe someone in need and think that we can not help them, or perhaps, that they should help themselves.   However, our small smile, friendly word, or humble offering--given not because of our own influence, but because we want to help others and honor Him--can, through Christ's enabling power, lift, help, and sustain the person in need.  His grace is sufficient for all.

I do not have to solve the world's problems.  I only need to offer what I can.

I'm thankful for the scriptures, and the insights we can gain from them.

What have you learned from the scriptures lately?

  1. You said this beautifully. I could say all sorts of things, but it's all simply agreeing with you and not said nearly so well. So I won't say anything else. :)

  2. Let me say only that this gets a lot of head nodding here at my kitchen table this afternoon. This was good for my soul to see today.

  3. You never know how much difference the littlest bit can make! Sometimes even just a hug can save someone's day. Good thoughts!

Six Sentence Story: Twist

An antique typewriter Each week, Denise at Girlie on the Edge blog posts a prompt word and invites bloggers to come up with a Six Sentence Story. It's a fun challenge for writers, and a delight for readers. Go over to her blog to read what others have written, and feel free to post your own story, too! This week's prompt: twist. ********************************* The kids who moved in next door were big kids--much older than her 3-year-old self--but they might be fun to play with, and as they were coming towards her, the idea of them being new friends seemed at least possible. She was rather shy, but she understood the basics of making friends, so when those neighbors crowded all around her and asked her what her name was, she didn't hesitate to answer.  She thought she had spoken loudly enough, but apparently her shyness got the best of her, because they didn't seem to have heard her.  "Twisty?" they asked, and recognizing she needed to be even louder, she ...

Ten Things of Thankful: Lovely Autumn

I've mentioned before, but it bears repeating, that I love fall.  This week I noticed the following:

Ten Things of Thankful: Valentine's Day is in Spring Edition

Despite what the groundhog predicted, here in my neck of the woods we have been enjoying balmy weather.  I think the nation needs a west coast groundhog to provide the local forecast.  I've spent time in my backyard this week, pruning palms and roses, pulling weeds, and planting raspberries and lilacs.  For those of you still buried in snow, I offer a hopeful glimpse of weather to come:
