Ten Things of Thankful: Raining Dogs

 Jumping right in:

1.  We had rain this week!  Not super heavy, like in Arizona and Nevada, but a nice amount.  We did set a record for rainfall amount for the day, but that is only because we had never had any measurable precipitation on that day since records were kept.  0.12 inches is hardly damaging.  While a few sprinkles will not reverse the drought, we can hope that this rainfall is just a harbinger of more of the wet stuff.  The plants look so much better after a refreshing rain, and the smell of rain makes me smile and breathe deeper.

2.  Naps.  We've had some interrupted sleep lately, and it's nice to be able to grab a view winks here and there.  Even Drexel enjoys cat naps!

3.  Friends.  This week was my occasional lunch with friends.  It's always good to catch up with what is happening in their lives.  We often laugh, we sometimes cry, but we always enjoy the time together.

4.  Guide dog puppies.  Drexel is delighted because I'm puppy sitting Willow this weekend.  Sometime soon I'll start raising another guide dog puppy, but for now, it's nice to borrow one every now and then.  (And apparently, we have enough Nylabones to go around.)

5.  Career-changed guide dog puppies--specifically, Drexel.  As I mentioned earlier this week, Drexel is my shadow.  He really likes me.  He even supervises my time on the treadmill.  (Excuse the blurriness of the photo--it's not easy to take pictures while running!)

6.  Produce.  I haven't picked up a produce box from the farm share delivery service for a while, and I've missed it.   I'm excited to see what is in the box Saturday morning!

7.  Things weren't as bad as they could have been.  There were only three, double-digit fraudulent charges on my credit card before I discovered the problem.  ("Honey, did you purchase anything through 'GTL*Inmate Phone'?  I didn't think so!") A quick call to the customer service representative resolved the problem--I hope.  Apparently inmates can only purchase phone cards, because that's all the charges seemed to be.  (And apparently they have a lot of time on their hands to just try random numbers, because there is no logical explanation on how one ended up with my credit card number.) Card has been canceled, and another is on its way.  All other accounts seem unaffected.

8.  The refrigerator is once (again) working, and the repairman didn't charge us for the second visit.  Keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn't actually have a leak in the line--which is apparently a death sentence, if the leak is inaccessible behind a panel. We should know soon.

9.  A situation that I anticipated would be a very long-drawn-out struggle with bureaucratic red tape is looking like it might be resolved soon and in a very good way.  Hurray!  Nevermind.  Rats.  OK, I'm thankful for the hope that everything will work out eventually.

10.  Always and forever, John.  We have so much fun together.  Even during weeks where life gets a little crazy around us, we just hold hands a little tighter and find something, anything, to laugh about--our own version of Ten Things of Thankful, I guess.

What about you?  What things are you thankful for this week?  Leave a comment and/or link your own Ten Things of Thankful post!

    1. He's so funny. He'll just stand there for 10 minutes or so, until he finally decides I'm OK and he'll lie down.

  3. No measurable rain on that day since records have been kept?!?! That just blows my mind. You really do live in the desert!

    1. I don't have the list of days like that, but I imagine that is not the only one. It almost literally never rains here!

  4. I get really upset over those red tape things. Being positive and thankful at the same time really helps. Nice fridge!

    1. I'm trying not to, though last night's sleepless night would indicate that I'm not quite there yet. As for the fridge, I value function over form, so I'm really hoping the repair lasts longer than the previous week's.

Whatever #9 is, I send you prayers for things to work out as they should.
I know someone else said it recently, but I love that John always makes your list - you have a great thing together. Hold tight to that - it's golden!

    1. Thank you. Prayers are always appreciated. The situation wouldn't have bothered me so much if my hopes hadn't been raised just a couple of days prior to being dashed. Oh well, such is life, and there are many things to be thankful for!

    3. I do live in the desert, but I haven't seen Christmas cactus growing outside. I have indoor Christmas cactus, and water them about once a week. If I remember correctly, they aren't actually a cactus.

  11. Ack....there were fraudulent charges on my credit card too. Hope that clears up, though! The rest of the week looks awesome!

  12. I am, as you know, a big fan of the canine people. lol
I look and watch them as powers of example....in an abstract way, of course. The napping thing! They demonstrate how to enjoy the simple things in life, no matter what their circumstance in life, they seem to be able to enjoy their naps without concern for appearances or what might happen when they wake up.
    excellent

    Love your list Kristi!!

  14. Oh RATS! to the red-tape thing coming back *sigh*

Fingers crossed that your fridge is leaking in an accessible and eminently mendable way. And YAY for rain, the smell of rain (petrichor, but I expect you know that) and you HAVING rain that you so desperately wanted. KEEP IT AWAY FROM ME :D

I'm glad you and John have so much fun and laughter. I want to keep that as I grow up with Husby.

    1. I was keep-me-awake-at-night disappointed with the red-tape thing, but I think I know how to approach the situation again, so hopefully we can get it settled soon.

We should know in the next day or two about the fridge. Thanks for the vocab. reminder--that's a great word, and really should be in common usage. It was 100 degrees here yesterday. I will gladly trade some of our heat for some of your rain!

We do have a lot of fun. When there are challenges in life, we try to remember that we are on the same team. It's always easier to face the storms of life together.

  15. I understand being thankful for the rain. We don't get enough here either, at times. Then over the past week we've had torrents of the stuff. We are in the peak of hurricane season so it's nice to get the water but it always comes with a bit of trepidation. Drexel is aborable. Canine companions cannot be beat, hands down. I love our Chloe! Naps....definitely something to be grateful for. Glad you got the credit card mess straightened out and whatever the other struggle with the red tape is, I will hope for the best as well.

  16. How I do so love a goofy dog wanting a belly rub! I was at a beach that allowed dogs this weekend and it was fabulous....people were wonderfully respectful of the beach and cleaned up and the dogs had a doggie convention!

  18. I feel for you about your fridge. Appliances can be so finicky sometimes. We have an LG bottom freezer and have had two repairs and have a constant problem with the ice maker being s-l-o-w. I am not sure that I would ever buy an LG refrigerator again. I hope that yours remains fixed!

    1. Ours is a Samsung, and the ice maker went out really early on, due to a bad design. I can live without an icemaker, but I am a bit more particular about expecting that the fridge and freezer will keep things cold. :-)

  19. Like bread and butter so too are rain and naps.
How cool that you raise guide dogs Kristi. They are so important to so many people. Personally, I can't imagine a world without dogs:)
I bet you are so relieved that the credit card breach wasn't worse than what is was. Very scary stuff! And whatever you need to work itself out eventually, I hope it does. To your satisfaction:)

  21. Love rainy days!
just this past week-end we had a tropical depression we so needed it. The grass is very crunchy.
We layed on the couch and watched movies and just gave thanks that we were able to spend good quality time together. The streets got flooded and it was really neat to see...
And there is a Hurricane somewhere in Mexico ...hopefully we can get some rain from there too.. We needed so bad the orchards need it desperately. All the farmers are praying....
    Have a blessed day Kristi.

    1. I can relate to the crunchy grass statement! I do hope for more rain, and not just for the grass, but also, as you said, for the crops.

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
