Ten Things of Thankful: Empty Nest Vintage Sol San Diego Edition

When we learned that we would have 5 weeks of an empty nest, we e-mailed Paisley, the owner of Vintage Sol, our favorite bed and breakfast in San Diego.  We asked her if she had any availability during our free time, and fortunately for us, she did! (Thankful #1)

We've stayed at Vintage Sol numerous times.  We love it so much that this time, we planned our getaway around the availability of this delightful bed and breakfast.  (We have stayed other places in San Diego, and while I have nothing negative to say about other accommodations, none are as homey and wonderful as Vintage Sol.) Paisley has a real knack for decorating, and I'm always in awe of the eclectic mix of items that fit together perfectly. (Inspiration=Thankful #2)

The weather is always perfect in San Diego (Thankful #3), and the private courtyard retreat of Vintage Sol sports greenery (Thankful #4), the cool sounds of a refreshing water fountain (Thankful #5), and the most beautiful Lady Gouldian finches (Thankful #6).

The whimsical, eclectic decor continues inside the perfect-for-two little casita.  A tiny kitchen is just inside the front doors, and Paisley has stocked the fridge with soft drinks and juice.  An assortment of snacks is in the cupboard (along with coffee and tea, which we don't drink, but I know is important to some.) (Thankful #7).

Paisley even decorates the top of the refrigerator!  Frido Kahlo appears throughout the room.

Vintage Sol is a bed and breakfast, and does not disappoint.  The bed is very comfortable, and the breakfasts are gourmet culinary treats.  Seriously, if Paisley ever publishes a cookbook, I'll be ordering at least one copy!  The first morning, we ate delicious Eggs Benedict, and the second morning, we feasted on wonderful quiche.  All breakfasts have plenty of fruits and veggies, and are served in an aesthetically-pleasing way. (Thankful #8).

Paisley always has great suggestions for things to do.  If it weren't for her, we never would have discovered Architectural Salvage, a store packed with all sorts of doors, light fixtures, fireplace mantles, playground equipment, and who-knows-what-else.  We always enjoy browsing there.  (Thankful #9).

Finally, I'm thankful for time spent with John.  No matter what we do, we enjoy time spent together.  Besides window-shopping at Architectural Salvage--there's a joke there somewhere, as we were not buying anything, but the store does carry many stained-glass (and otherwise) windows--we spent time at the beach, watched ocean animals at Sea World, and took a walking tour where we learned a bit about San Diego history, as well as sampled tasty restaurant fare--oh, and gawked at a wedding party.  (Thankful #10).

We're calling this an impressionistic portrait, not an out-of-focus selfie.

    1. Oh, I definitely recommend Vintage Sol to anyone who is traveling to San Diego as a couple. (Maximum occupancy is 2, so if you're going as a family, you will have to look elsewhere.)

  2. I am so happy you both got to get away and spend a bit of time together and truly looked like so much fun. I hope someday to get to San Diego even for a visit. So thank you for sharing and loved all your pics, especially the selfie of you two together :)

    1. I was always a bit too proud of my perfect eyesight. It's not so perfect anymore, and I'm embarrassed when I find not just one, but two pairs of glasses perched on top of my head. When in the world did I turn into an old person?

You have the best sense of humor, no doubt you and John have loads of fun. And you take fantastic photos. Feel free to put as many as you want in any post. (Coming from the woman who knows how to photo-overkill her posts.) ;)

John and I do have fun together.
As for the photos, you flatter me. My head is getting bigger by the moment! She who writes how-to-take-good-photos posts is complimenting me? Thanks! You would laugh at my attempts to learn how to use my new camera phone--well, maybe you already have. My selfie skills are certainly lacking! :-)

  12. Well, seems I found a place to stay our last night on our next trip!! (The plan now is driving from Vancouver to San Diego Highway 1) Looks very lovely and wouldn't that be a great place we could have in common together?! Thanks for that tip.
Love the pictures too and your re-titleling of the selfie. Thinking different makes it much more positif!
I love how you two have such good times together. Making memories is the best, isn't it?!

  13. Vintage Soul looks absolutely lovely! That's the decorating style I love--tons of stuff and color, color, color. The place my family stayed in VA a week or two ago was like that, but with less of a SW, Latin theme. I took a ton of pics for inspiration. So glad you two are continuing to enjoy your empty nest!

  16. How wonderful to take a lovely retreat like that together! That place looks amazing - you had me at the orange and pink doorway! Family is wonderful, children are such a blessing. But it is still so important to have couple-only time, too!

  17. Gorgeous pictures of a gorgeous place! We went to San Diego once and stopped at Seaside Village (is that what it is?). We were walking down a big, wide sidewalk and I wasn't looking and ran smack into a pylon that was just above knee high. It made such a noise that the people walking about 30 feet in front of us turned around and the homeless man on the bench turned to look. I thought my kneecaps had shattered into dust. (They didn't.) You have much better memories of San Diego than me! I want to go there with YOU next time :)

    1. I love to play tour guide! I must warn you, though, that I tripped on the sidewalk during our San Diego getaway. I didn't actually hit the ground, but I wasn't exactly graceful, either, so I'm not sure how much protection from pylons I would be!

  18. Oh, what a lovely get-away, Kristi! That is the most adorable B& B I've ever seen! I think I might be on "sensory overload" with so many wonderful things to see. I'm in awe of that pot of succulents, as they are a new passion of mine -- I can actually grow them in AZ! Little Italy is one of our faves whenever we've gone to SD. So glad you had such a wonderful time!

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
