The Soundtrack of My Mind

Question:  When you wake up, do you have a song playing in your head?  I don't mean your alarm tune, either.

Very often, when I wake up, I realize that I've got "background music" in my mind.  Sometimes, it's a song that I heard the previous day, particularly if I don't know all the lyrics.  It's as though my brain is trying to learn the words while I sleep.  (I'm not sure how it would think it could do that.  It must have a higher opinion of itself than I have of it!)  The best way to stop that soundtrack is to learn the words during my awake moments.

Often, the song in my head is one of our church choir numbers.  Since I start practicing our Christmas music in September, I usually have Christmas carols playing in my mind all autumn.

Sometimes, especially if I wake up in the middle of the night, the music will just be a seemingly random song.  If I pay attention to it, though, I realize that the message is just what I needed to hear.

Music is a powerful tool.  When our children were small, every time we moved, John would put our new phone number to music.  The kids were quickly able to learn their new phone number that way.  What is set to music tends to stick with us.

What is playing in the soundtrack of your mind?   (Due to the mention of the movie, "Groundhog Day" a few days ago on another blog,  I'm currently playing, "I've Got You, Babe."  I'm ready for another song!)

  1. Haha no but I wish I did! I usually fall asleep with the TV on- maybe that is my problem.

  2. We watched Groundhog Day on Sunday evening too! We love it. Tonight on the way home from the Pathway Gathering I heard an old James Taylor song from my teen years "You've Got a Friend." I enjoyed singing along and remembering the good friends I've had throughout my life.

  3. I don't mind waking up with a song on my mind but I hate when I can't get it out of my mind when I am trying to go to sleep! My song this week has been My Valentine (Paul McCartney) and it is definitely stuff there!

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
