Friday Family History: Vacuuming Flashback

I've spent a fair amount of time this morning vacuuming.  I had been nursing along my old vacuum for quite some time, but recently decided to go ahead and buy a new one.  Oh, what joy:  no stopping every few minutes to unclog the hose, no loss of suction.  It behaves the way a vacuum cleaner should.  To add to its appeal, it takes me back to my childhood every time I use it.

Now, I don't mean back to my baby days, when I was terrified of the sound of the vacuum.  No, I mean back to my big girl days--when I was 3--and I could be a helper.

Dressed to the nines in my bright outfit, complete with doggie slippers, I was ready to tackle the challenge.  The canister wheeled behind me as I glided the attachment over the gold carpet.

The very best part of vacuuming, though, came at the end.  Once the vacuum was off and the cord unplugged, I pressed the magic button and swoosh! the cord automatically retracted into the machine.

Guess what?  My new vacuum cleaner, though not a canister vac, has that same magic button that rewinds the cord!  I think I'll go vacuum another room, so I can push the rewind button again.

What reminds you of your childhood?

  1. I remember using the same vacuum as a child. I think it was a Eureka.

  2. How wonderful to be happy with such a small thing! I vacuum every day - first job I do once awake and dressed,- because of the 4 cats of course, but I love to do it! I really don't mind house chores, I really don't. Washing the dishes - yes, by hand, don't have a dishwasher - is my other favorite. I think because you can see direct result from doing it. A clean floor and furniture and a tidy countertop just make me happy I guess. Have fun vacuuming!!!

  3. The smell of homemade bread baking takes me right to my grandmother's kitchen!

  4. I had one of those buttons! AND last week my hair dryer died -- there were sparks and everything -- so I got a new one -- and it has that button!

  5. I forgot about that button! I loved it! I did hate the canister vacuum though - it was always tipping over. I suppose I went to fast around the corners. So happy for you that you have a new one. Nothing like a vacuum that works!

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
