Tuesday Time to Tackle: Digital Scrapbooking Software Review and Giveaway!

My children grew up during the scrapbooking craze.  I tried to keep up and preserve photos of my children in beautiful, creative, acid-free books.  My children loved pouring over their books, but after a number of years, the kids thought they were frozen in time.  I fell behind, and while I continued to snap photos, the pictures never quite made in into the scrapbooks.

I phased out of actual film photos and into digital prints, and fewer and fewer photos even made it to the print stage.  Clearly, I needed to do something.  I thought occasionally about digital scrapbooking, but never really got started.

A few weeks ago, Liz from www.mymemories.com contacted me about the opportunity to review their mymemories suite v.3 software and host a giveaway.  I hesitated a bit, as I don't want the blog to become a blog of advertisements, but as the product actually did interest me, I decided to say yes.  Also, I'm quite excited that one of you readers will get a chance to receive a copy of the software, too!  More about that at the end of this post, but first, I want to tell you my impressions.

Overall, I am enjoying the software.   I am not very experienced with digital scrapbooking programs, so I don't have much with which to compare it, but the software is fairly intuitive.

The initial download took a while (which might have been my internet connection's fault), but once it was installed on my computer, it ran without a hitch.  The website has several video tutorials, including the following introduction to the software:

I found the tutorial a bit lengthy and the rate of speech too fast, but I learned quite a bit.

One thing that I really like about mymemories.com is that they have pages of free kits available for download, as well as pages for purchase, which means that you can add to the designs that come with the software.  Just be sure to "save and run" when you download them, and that will launch the installer. (The purchased or free kits download very quickly.)

Here is an example of one of the free pages I added into my software:

It took no time at all to drop that photo of my son and daughter-in-law into the page, rotate it slightly, and change the photo to sepia.  So quick and easy, and the page is so cute!

Mymemories suite isn't only useful for scrapbooking, though.  Think of the Christmas card possibilities!

Last year (or was it 2 years ago?), our Christmas card was similar to that one.  As I was using mymemories suite software to design the above card, I found myself wishing I previously had access to that software .  The project came together so quickly!

Here's another Christmas card idea:

I had fun choosing the elements of the card and putting it together, and it would be so easy to just print up on 4x6 photo paper for a truly unique Christmas card.

I'm excited that mymemories.com is giving away a full copy of mymemories suite v.3 to one lucky reader of this blog!  To enter, leave a comment on this post (Click on the blue "__comments" link at the bottom of this post to open up the comment form), then click on the Rafflecopter "Do it!" tab to indicate you commented.  Please make sure that your profile is set to accept e-mails, so I can contact you if you win.  Good luck!

  2. Oh, how much fun! I sound a bit like you. I have so many digital photos that have never made it to print. I would love to do something with those special photos. i also love the idea of making my own Christmas cards, and birthday card, etc. So much fun to personalize and also make picture gifts. It is neat that the company is letting you give one away. Thanks for your review. I am going to check out their link.

  3. I have truly enjoyed seeing all of your blogs, posts, pictures! I have soooooo many pictures through the years that I wonder if I ever will get caught up on them. I would love to be able to personalize them more and not having to print, cut, glue etc they would all be on the computer so I am thinking it would go so much faster! I have never used digital scrapbooking but think that would be a good way to get me going and caught up! :) Thanks for the invite to enter and I will continue to keep up with reading your blog to see how you and the family are doing.

    Friends Always,

    Charmel

Ten Things of Thankful: Autumn Edition

It's autumn time, one of my favorite times of year.  I just couldn't leave this weekend as a one-post weekend.

Ten Things of Thankful: Last Two Weeks

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, as viewed from an overlook I apologize for not commenting on your blog posts this past week; John and I took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park, leaving behind our computers and, to a large extent, cell phone service. We escaped the outside world and just spent time in nature. Though we have friends near Yellowstone (who we love to visit) we made this trip just about us, so please forgive us if we were nearby and didn't stop by. The crowds were minimal (though we did mask up whenever we passed someone on the trails) and we spent our days hiking, taking photos, and watching geysers erupt. Today, we are back home and back to work, and, in the case of my computer, back to old shenanigans like not letting me import my photos. (I was able to add the above photo by using blogger on my phone, but that isn't my preferred method.) I want to write about Yellowstone and have photos I want to share, but will leave that for another

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this
